Job summary

Job Overview

The Patching Lead is responsible for overseeing, planning, and executing system updates and vulnerability remediation across an organisations IT infrastructure. This role ensures systems remain secure, compliant, and highly available by coordinating patch deployment schedules, managing risk, and leading a team of patching engineers/administrators.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy & Management

• Develop, implement, and maintain the organisations patch management policies and lifecycle strategies.
• Lead and supervise a dedicated team of patch administrators and engineers.
• Set patching schedules (maintenance windows) to minimise business disruption while maintaining security compliance.
• Coordinate cross-functional efforts between Security, Infrastructure, DevOps, and Application teams.

Operations & Deployment

• Oversee regular patching cycles across diverse environments (Windows, Linux, cloud infrastructure).
• Test patches in non-production environments to evaluate compatibility and prevent outages.
• Manage emergency/out-of-band patching procedures for Zero-Day and critical vulnerabilities.
• Define and execute rollback procedures in case a patch causes system downtime or application failure.

Vulnerability Assessment & Reporting

• Partner with the Cyber Security team to prioritise vulnerabilities based on CVSS scores, threat intelligence, and asset criticality.
• Track patch compliance, success rates, and system coverage across all servers.
• Produce regular operational reports, dashboards, and executive updates regarding patch readiness and posture.
• Identify non-compliant, unpatched, or end-of-life (EOL) assets and drive remediation plans.

Compliance & Governance

• Ensure patch management processes align with industry standards and frameworks.
• Maintain audit-ready records, change logs, and evidence of patch deployments.
• Lead quarterly and annual patch compliance audits.

Qualifications & Requirements

Education & Experience

• Equivalent work experience.
• 8+ years of hands-on experience in vulnerability management, patch deployment, or systems administration.
• Prior experience in a leadership, lead, or senior engineer capacity.

Technical Skills

• Expertise in centralised enterprise patching tools (e.g., Manage Engine, Ansible, Red Hat Satellite).
• Deep understanding of enterprise operating systems (Windows Server, Linux/Unix distributions).
• Experience with vulnerability scanning engines (Tenable/Nessus).
• Familiarity with ITSM and Change Management platforms (e.g., ServiceNow, Jira).
• Scripting capability (PowerShell, Bash, Python) for automated patch tasks.

Soft Skills

• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Excellent problem-solving, crisis management, and decision-making capabilities.
• Ability to negotiate maintenance windows with business units effectively.
