About Kidureka
Kidureka creates thoughtfully designed books, toys and learning experiences for children aged 2+.

We are looking for a Visual Designer to join our children’s books team and help shape the visual world of our books — from the first concept and visual direction to the final printed product.

About the Role
This is a hands‑on book and visual design role for someone who understands that designing for children is about much more than making things colourful or cute.
You will work across book design, typography, visual storytelling, illustration direction and page composition, creating books that are engaging for children, intuitive to use and aesthetically strong enough to stand out in a modern bookstore.
You will collaborate closely with writers, editors, illustrators and product teams to take books from concept → design → production.
What You’ll Work On
Book Design & Layout
- Design complete children’s books from concept to final print-ready files.
- Develop the visual identity and design language for individual books and book series.
- Create covers, spreads, chapter openers, activity pages, information pages, title pages, back covers and supporting elements.
- Build layouts that balance text, illustration, activities, learning content and whitespace.
- Design for different age groups and formats while maintaining strong visual consistency.
Visual Storytelling
- Translate ideas and content into engaging visual experiences for children.
- Use composition, pacing, scale, colour and typography to support storytelling and learning.
- Work with illustrators to develop visual references, moodboards and illustration direction.
- Identify opportunities to make pages more interactive, intuitive and engaging.
Typography & Visual Systems
- Develop clear and child‑friendly typographic hierarchies.
- Make thoughtful decisions around fonts, sizing, spacing and readability.
- Build repeatable visual systems across a book or an entire series.
- Ensure designs remain consistent across multiple pages, chapters and products.
Production
- Prepare accurate, print‑ready artwork and production files.
- Work with the production and printing teams to resolve design and file‑related issues.
- Review proofs and final outputs for typography, alignment, colour, spacing and consistency.
- Maintain organised working files and version control across multiple projects.
Collaboration
- Work closely with content writers, editors, illustrators, product managers and production teams.
- Participate in design reviews and iterate based on feedback.
- Help establish and improve design standards and processes for Kidureka’s children’s publishing portfolio.
What We’re Looking For
- 3–5+ years of professional experience in visual design, book design, publishing, graphic design or a related field.
- Strong experience in children’s books, educational publishing, children’s products or other child‑focused design is highly preferred.
- A strong portfolio showing book design, page layouts, typography, visual storytelling and illustration‑led work.
- Strong understanding of composition, hierarchy, typography and colour.
- Ability to create work that feels modern, playful and engaging without becoming cluttered, overly decorative or cliché.
- Strong understanding of how illustrations and text work together across a page and an entire book.
- Proficiency in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop or equivalent professional tools.
- Good understanding of print production and pre‑press requirements.
- High attention to detail and the ability to maintain consistency across complete books.
- Ability to take ownership of projects while collaborating effectively with a multidisciplinary team.
Educational Background
A degree or diploma in Communication Design, Graphic Design, Visual Communication, Illustration, Fine Arts, Applied Arts, Architecture, Product Design or a related discipline is preferred.
We are also open to candidates from technology or other disciplines who have subsequently moved into design and have built substantial professional experience in children’s design, publishing or child‑focused products.
You’ll Be a Great Fit If You
- Think about the child first, not just the aesthetics.
- Love books, storytelling, visual learning and creating things for children.
- Can look at a 60-page book as one cohesive visual experience rather than 60 individual pages.
- Have strong visual judgement and are comfortable defending design decisions.
- Notice the details — typography, spacing, pacing, hierarchy and consistency.
- Enjoy working from an early idea and figuring out how it should actually look and feel.
- Want to help build the visual design language of a growing children’s brand.
Portfolio
Your portfolio is an important part of the application.
Please include relevant work demonstrating:
- Children’s books or publishing projects
- Complete book spreads or page systems
- Cover design
- Typography and layout
- Illustration‑led design
- Work designed for children or educational products
- Projects where you have taken ownership from concept to final execution
We are looking for designers who can think, design and execute, not just people who can make individual pages look good.
