Job summary

Onesea Solutions Pte Ltd is seeking a Technical Superintendent to oversee vessel operations, ensure compliance with EMS and SMS, and coordinate scheduled dry dockings and repairs. The role requires hands-on leadership, strong technical knowledge, and international travel as needed.

The candidate will manage budgets, monitor performance, and liaise with the onboard master and chief engineer to ensure safe, reliable, and economical vessel operation.

Qualifications

  • Experience as a technical superintendent on handy-max sized (or larger) vessels engaged in international trading.
  • Must have at least one year of experience in the technical superintendent role in such vessels.
  • English proficiency for a multi-cultural environment.

Responsibilities

  • Understand EMS, health, safety and quality policies and responsibilities under EMS.
  • Report noncompliance to manager or senior management.
  • Guide, advise and monitor vessel operations and assist crew maintenance.
  • Research technical information for equipment breakdowns and upgrades for long-term performance.
  • Prepare for scheduled dry dockings, surveys and repairs and arrange spares and services.
  • Manage vessels in compliance with local and international rules and SMS.
  • Analyse ships’ performance and report to master and chief engineer.
  • Ensure compliance with certification and survey requirements.
  • Visit vessels port and potentially sail with ships for safety and efficiency checks.
  • Monitor on-board issues and drive resolutions.
  • Prepare budgets for yearly operation and maintenance within timelines.
  • Monitor expenses and submit monthly variance reporting.
  • Ensure reporting employees adhere to policies and procedures.
  • Communicate expectations to team and provide leadership.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Job description

  • Understand the Health, Safety, Environmental Protection and Quality Policy and the responsibilities under the Environmental Management System (EMS). In keeping with this and other compliance policies
  • Report any environmental noncompliance and/or concern to the manager or members either of the senior management team (including the highest level of management) directly or through the open reporting system as per Management System guidelines
  • Guide, advise, and monitor vessel operations; also assists crew performing vessel maintenance
  • Research technical information related to equipment breakdowns, malfunctions, improvements, upgrades or modifications for the reliable long-term performance of the vessels
  • Prepare for scheduled dry dockings, surveys, and repairs on assigned ships, and arranges and manages supply of spares, stores, and services to vessels before scheduled maintenance and breakdown repairs
  • Manage vessels in full compliance with local and international rules and regulations; and with company’s Safety Management System (SMS)
  • Analyse ships’ performance and relays this information to the onboard master and chief engineer; ensures compliance with current charterparty terms of employment and other commercial concerns
  • Ensure compliance with all necessary operational certification and survey requirements applicable to assigned vessels
  • Visit vessels port; may sail with Company's ships to reasonably ascertain that they are operated in a safe, reliable and economical way
  • Monitor function and performance during ship visits and initiates effective problem solving of on-board issues, including technical, quality assurance, health and safety, commercial or personnel issues
  • Takes ownership of on-board issues and follows them through to resolution
  • Prepare budgets in the required detail for the yearly operation of assigned ships, scheduled dry dockings, surveys, repairs and ad-hoc modifications and repairs within required timelines.
  • Monitor expenses of assigned vessels and submits monthly variance reporting and tracks against budget
  • Ensure that all reporting employees adhere to company policies and procedures
  • Communicates expectations to direct reports; manages performance and provides leadership and support to team members
  • Perform other duties as required
Requirements
  • Degree in marine engineering or equivalent
  • Must have at least one year of experience as a technical superintendent in a company managing handy-max sized (or larger) vessels engaged in international trading and must have a minimum of one full year in rank as a chief engineer or have completed three contracts as a chief engineer
  • English language skills, both verbal and written, must be effective and suitable for a multi-cultural working environment
  • Strong technical knowledge
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel)
  • Demonstrates commitment to Company's’s Maritime Resource Management values
  • Previous experience with new-builds and dry-dockings preferred
  • Regular international travel is required and may be on short notice
  • Must have mobility to conduct vessel inspections
  • Will be required to carry a mobile device and check regularly outside of office hours
  • Must maintain a home internet connection for work outside of office hours
