Location: Hyderabad, Telangana
Job Purpose
To support and manage intellectual property activities across Formulation, API, and Biotechnology, including patent searching, patentability assessment, prior-art analysis, IP landscaping, freedom‑to‑operate (FTO) assessment, patent drafting support, prosecution coordination, and IP portfolio management.
Key Responsibilities
1. Patent Searching & Prior‑Art Analysis
- Conduct comprehensive patent and non-patent literature searches for pharmaceutical and biotechnology inventions.
- Perform prior‑art searches using databases such as Google Patents, Espacenet, WIPO Patentscope, USPTO, and other relevant patent databases.
- Analyze patent specifications, claims, prosecution history, and legal status.
- Identify relevant prior art for formulation, API process, analytical methods, drug delivery systems, biologics, and biotechnology inventions.
- Prepare prior‑art search reports and technical summaries.
2. Patentability Assessment
- Evaluate inventions for novelty, inventive step/non‑obviousness, industrial applicability, and patent eligibility in coordination with technical and legal teams.
- Review invention disclosures received from Formulation R&D, API R&D, Process R&D, Analytical R&D, and Biotechnology teams.
- Identify potentially patentable features in pharmaceutical and biotechnology research.
- Support preparation of invention disclosure forms and invention assessment reports.
- Coordinate with inventors and scientists to understand technical aspects of inventions.
3. Formulation IP
- Conduct patent analysis related to:
- Novel formulations
- Drug delivery systems
- Solid oral dosage forms
- Controlled/modified‑release formulations
- Combination products
- Pharmaceutical compositions
- Polymorphs, salts, solvates and solid‑state forms
- Process and manufacturing improvements
- Stability and formulation technologies
- Analyze formulation patent claims and assess potential IP risks during product development.
4. API / Process IP
- Perform patent searches and analysis relating to:
- API synthesis routes
- Novel intermediates
- Process improvements
- Polymorphs and crystalline forms
- Salts and solvates
- Chiral resolution
- Catalytic processes
- Impurity‑control strategies
- Alternative manufacturing processes
- Support process R&D teams in identifying potentially patentable process innovations.
- Conduct FTO‑oriented analysis for proposed API manufacturing routes.
5. Biotechnology IP
- Support IP activities related to:
- Biologics
- Biosimilars
- Recombinant proteins
- Monoclonal antibodies
- Cell and gene therapy technologies
- Microbial/biotechnological processes
- Fermentation technologies
- Cell lines and expression systems
- Biological assays and analytical technologies
- Analyze patent claims covering biological molecules, sequences, processes, formulations, and manufacturing technologies.
6. Freedom‑to‑Operate (FTO)
- Conduct preliminary FTO searches and landscape analysis for new products, formulations, API processes, and biotechnology projects.
- Identify potentially relevant third‑party patents and patent families.
- Analyze claim scope and relevance to proposed products/processes.
- Prepare FTO search reports and technical claim charts in coordination with patent counsel.
- Track patent expiry, legal status, and relevant prosecution developments.
7. Patent Drafting & Prosecution Support
- Prepare technical inputs for patent specifications and claims.
- Work with external patent attorneys/counsels for drafting and filing patent applications.
- Review patent drafts for technical accuracy and consistency with the underlying invention.
- Support responses to patent office examination reports, objections, and office actions.
- Coordinate with inventors and patent counsel during prosecution.
- Maintain records of filing dates, priority dates, applications, grants, and prosecution status.
8. IP Landscape & Competitive Intelligence
- Conduct technology and competitor patent landscaping.
- Identify emerging technologies, competitors, patent trends, and potential white spaces.
- Prepare patent landscape reports for Formulation, API, and Biotechnology projects.
- Monitor competitor patent filings and relevant changes in patent portfolios.
- Provide IP intelligence to R&D, Business Development, Regulatory, and management teams.
9. IP Portfolio Management
- Maintain and update patent databases and IP trackers.
- Monitor patent filing, prosecution, grant, renewal, and expiry timelines.
- Coordinate with internal stakeholders and external counsel for portfolio management.
- Maintain invention disclosures, patent applications, search reports, FTO reports, and related IP documentation.
- Support periodic review of the organization's IP portfolio.
