Job summary

Aviva India is seeking a Senior Manager - Underwriting to lead high-value risk assessment with strong governance. The role blends medical/financial underwriting oversight and operational team leadership, guiding junior staff and coordinating with reinsurance partners.

You will influence policy design, ensure regulatory compliance, manage TATs, and mentor a team while collaborating across distribution, head office, and channels to support business growth.

Qualifications

• Graduate/PG in medicine, pharma or equivalent.
• Insurance certifications such as ALU/FLMI are preferred.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate complex medical and financial life insurance applications.
• Strong understanding of medical/financial risk analysis and regulatory compliance.
• Drive adherence to target turnaround times (TAT) while maintaining quality and regulatory compliance.
• Act as primary liaison with reinsurance partners and revise underwriting manuals.
• Collaborate with distribution and stakeholders to meet business requirements.
• Authorize high-value or complex cases exceeding junior staff authority.
• Mentor junior underwriters to enhance decisioning quality.
• Design and implement a robust QC framework for underwriting.
• Support sales channels to explain complex underwriting decisions and retain business.
• Take on additional inter/intra department projects.

Role objective- A Senior Manager - Underwriting at Aviva Life Insurance (HO) functions as a critical team lead role blending high-value risk assessment with operational team management and medical/financial underwriting governance.

Formal Qualifications

• Graduate/ Post graduate in medicine/Pharma/Doctor or alternate medicine
• Certified insurance (e.g., ALU, FLMI, or equivalent actuarial/medical certifications) course would be having added weightage

Specific Responsibilities

• Evaluate complex medical and financial applications for life insurance in accordance with the established company procedures, philosophy and risk appetite
• Strong understanding of medical/financial risk analysis, regulatory compliance, data-driven decision making, KYC/AML guidelines
• Drive adherence to target turnaround times (TAT) for case processing while maintaining strict quality control and regulatory compliance
• Act as the primary liaison with reinsurance partners, actively participate in the revision of underwriting manuals, and design risk criteria.
• Stakeholder management To work closely with distribution team, internal and external stakeholders to fulfil business requirements
• High-Value Case Adjudication: Sign off on HNI or high-complexity life insurance applications that exceed the authority limits of junior underwriting staff
• To guide and mentor junior team members for enhancing UW skills to a quality decisioning
• Internal Quality Audits: Design and implement a robust department-level Quality Check (QC) framework to monitor underwriting accuracy, consistency, and compliance with the company's risk manual
• Distribution Channel Support: Act as the primary escalation point for sales agencies, bancassurance partners, and digital channels to explain complex underwriting decisions and retain business.
• Willingness to take additional responsibilities/involvement in various inter and intra department processes/projects

Technical Underwriting & Risk Assessment

• High-Value/Complex Cases: Personally review and authorize high-risk, high-sum-assured, or complex medical and financial life underwriting applications.
• Reinsurance Consultation: Act as an escalation point of contact for handling cases that exceed individual authority limits, liaising directly with Aviva's reinsurance partners.
• Financial & Medical Analysis: Thoroughly assess personal/corporate financial statements, medical history, and lifestyle risk factors.
