Job summary

Smiths Detection is seeking a UI/UX Engineer to design user-facing interfaces and help build a scalable design system for our web and app solutions. You will translate requirements into engaging, accessible interfaces and collaborate with developers to implement them.

The role emphasizes user-centric design, rapid prototyping, and delivering consistent experiences across enterprise applications. Strong portfolio and Angular experience are preferred.

Qualifications

• 3+ years' UI/UX design experience with portfolio of web/app designs.
• 3+ years' hands-on experience with design tooling such as Figma or Adobe XD.
• 1+ years' hands-on experience translating designs into front-end code (HTML/CSS/JS) or collaborating with developers.
• Understanding of accessibility standards and usability best practice.
• Front-end development experience in Angular or similar framework.
• Experience establishing a design system from scratch.
• User-Centric Design: translating user needs into intuitive interfaces.
• Rapid Prototyping: wireframes, user flows, high-fidelity models.
• Design Systems Architecture: reusable component libraries for consistency.
• Usability & Accessibility: meet WCAG and iterate with user feedback.
• Stakeholder Communication: articulate design decisions with teams.

Job Description

Job Purpose:
The UI/UX Engineer designs and helps build user-facing interfaces for the team's applications over a defined engagement, raising the design quality and consistency of the team's tools and leaving behind a clean, documented handover.

Duties:

• Gather and interpret user and business requirements through stakeholder conversations, and user research where relevant.
• Design user interfaces and experiences for the team's web and app-based solutions, from wireframes through to high-fidelity designs.
• Build and maintain design system components for consistency across the team's applications.
• Translate designs into working front-end code, or work closely with developers to implement them accurately.
• Present design concepts, prototypes and rationale to stakeholders, incorporating feedback into iterations.
• Conduct usability reviews and iterate on designs based on feedback.
• Work with stakeholders and developers to balance user needs with technical constraints.
• Ensure designs meet accessibility standards.
• Document design decisions and maintain design assets for future reference and a clean handover at the end of the contract.

Skills and Experience:

• 3+ years' UI/UX design experience, with a portfolio demonstrating web and/or app design work.
• 3+ years' practical experience with design tooling such as Figma or Adobe XD.
• 1+ years' hands-on experience translating designs into front-end code (HTML/CSS/JS) or working closely with developers who do.
• Understanding of accessibility standards and usability best practice.

• Experience establishing a design system from scratch.
