Job description

Uplevyl builds AI-powered knowledge and community infrastructure for organizations serving women. Our products include UpGenie (our domain-specific AI assistant), WeHub (our community platform), and UpSocial (a social platform for women). We work with mission-driven partners to turn complex, high-stakes information into clear, trustworthy guidance, and to build systems that create lasting impact.

We hold a simple conviction: in high-stakes domains like rights, law, and financial security, a generic AI is not enough. The answers people stake their lives and livelihoods on need a purpose-built system with verified, native data. That is what we build, and it is why the work is urgent. AI is reshaping how the world learns, works, and earns, and the women we serve cannot afford to be left off that train.

We have also made a deliberate choice about how we build: a small team of exceptional people, paid well above market, each doing work that would normally take several. We would rather be ten people who move the world than thirty who move paper. That choice sets the bar for every hire, including this one.

About the role

Our website is our front door. Almost everyone who meets our founder goes there next, and over the coming months that traffic arrives on the back of a Forbes piece, an industry award, and a Financial Times feature. What those visitors find cannot merely be tidy. It has to look like it was made by someone with taste, and it has to carry a story no one else is telling.

You own that, and more than that. You are the design function at Uplevyl: the website, the interfaces inside UpGenie, WeHub, and UpSocial, the brand itself, and the investor and partnership material that goes into rooms we are not in.

What makes this role unusual is that you build what you design. We are not looking for someone who produces a file and hands it to engineering; the gap between those two people is where quality has died for us before. You work in Framer today, and you will move into the codebase as the site grows. The interactive pieces are yours end to end: a chart a reader clicks into rather than watches, a hero that answers a cursor, a section that assembles as you scroll. Being able to build something like that quickly, and build it well, is not a bonus skill in this role. It is the job, and it is the first thing we look for.

It helps to know what we are trying to make. Uplevyl’s work is recovering knowledge about women that was never collected, or was collected and then lost. Our site is meant to be the first small instance of that idea: more than twenty works by historical women artists woven through it and properly attributed, because when we went looking for a site that already did this, there wasn’t one. The whole thing should read like a good technology magazine — feminine without being decorative, art and engineering in the same frame, closer to something etched in glass than printed on paper. That is a real design problem, and it is the interesting part of this job.

What you’ll own
  • The website, end-to-end. Structure, layout, typography, motion, and the copy when the copy is the thing that is wrong. You publish it, you test it on desktop and mobile, and you test it in Safari, because most of the people we build for are on Safari.
  • Interactive work that feels alive. The magazine version of our site: case data rendered as colored stripes a mathematically-minded reader understands on sight, a panel that opens onto one woman’s story and closes back into the page, visualizations a reader moves through rather than watches. You build these in days, not quarters.
  • Product interfaces and the system underneath them. UpGenie, WeHub, and UpSocial are live products with real users and recurring design bugs. Own the design system and component library that end them, and set the standard for what our product looks like when someone who does this for a living opens it.
  • The brand and the assets that carry it. Logo, type, palette, and the investor decks, capability statements, brochures, and campaign creative that represent us when we are not in the room. Keep them recognizably Uplevyl even when three of them are due the same day.
  • The quality bar itself. Whether things line up, whether a card breaks the pattern, whether the text sits right — these are calls only a sharp, trained eye can make. Nothing leaves you that a founder has to catch. You are the last person who looks, and you look properly.
  • A cadence the team can rely on. Changes compiled Monday, pushed Wednesday, tested Thursday, live Friday. Page owners across the company come to you, and you make the result read as one thing.
Who we’re looking for

We are not looking for a UI/UX designer, and we are not looking for a front-end developer who executes a mock. We want the rarer person who is honestly both: understands art, understands engineering, and would be bored doing only one of them. We hire across levels. The portfolio decides, not the years.

  • You build high-end interactive and animated work, fast. This is the gate. Show us a piece that would normally take a team much longer than it took you — an interactive visualization, a generative or motion piece, a scroll experience — and be able to walk us through how you pulled it off. If you cannot do this, nothing else in the application will make up for it.
  • An eye that is almost uncomfortable. You notice the four-pixel gap, the card that breaks the grid, the clipped descender, the animation that stutters on someone else’s machine. You notice it first, because the alternative is that our CEO notices it first.
  • You read the content, not just the layout. Hand you a dense page about jurisdictional employment law or wealth advisory and you work out what it is trying to say, then design something that says it better. When the words are the problem, you say so and offer a fix.
  • Taste with an argument behind it. You can hold “feminine” and “serious technology” in one design without collapsing into either. You have references, opinions about those references, and reasons for a choice beyond liking it.
  • High agency. There is no design team below you and no brief waiting on your desk. You take a surface, own it, finish it, and tell us it is done.
  • Outcomes over hours. We care about what shipped and how good it was.
  • You came to design sideways — through finance, engineering, marketing, growth, or something else entirely. Some of the strongest people we have looked at did.
  • You have a real practice in generative art, WebGL or Three.js, motion design, or data visualization.
  • You have built and maintained a design system or component library in production.
  • You have worked in Framer, Webflow, Replit, Lovable, or similar, and you know where each one stops.
  • You have built a brand from nothing: identity, logo, type system, the lot.
  • You have worked in mission-driven, social-impact, women-focused, or nonprofit ecosystems.
  • You have founder, startup operator, or early-employee experience.

The work is demanding, the expectations are real, and the rewards, in compensation, in ownership, and in what you will learn, match them. Our interview process is thorough, and we will walk you through every step of it in our first conversation.

How we work at Uplevyl
  • We finish what we start, and we do it well. We follow through on what we say we’ll do, and we care about the difference our work makes.
  • We listen before we decide. Before we act, we ask who it actually affects: a customer, a partner, a teammate, or the communities we serve. Trust here is built the plain way, by consistently showing up for people.
  • We move with ownership and urgency. We don’t wait for perfect information or for someone else to raise their hand. If something looks like it could go wrong, we say so early. We make the call, we move fast, and we hold a high bar for quality.
  • We’re better together than alone. We work across teams, say what we actually think, and go out of our way to help each other succeed. Leadership here is measured by the impact you create.
  • We stay curious and keep learning, including how to use AI well. We hold ourselves to the bar we’re building toward: questioning our own assumptions and using AI to think better and move faster.
