Job summary

Egis, an international engineering group, seeks a Railway Traction Power Engineer in Bengaluru to design, analyze, implement and maintain traction power systems for railway networks. You will work with civil, signal and project teams to ensure reliability, efficiency and safety of electrical traction power, delivering projects on time and within budget.

Job Description

The Railway Traction Power Engineer is responsible for the design, analysis, implementation, and maintenance of traction power systems for railway networks. This role involves ensuring the reliability, efficiency, and safety of the electrical systems that power locomotives and railway networks. The engineer will work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, including civil engineers, signal engineers, and project managers, to deliver railway infrastructure projects.

1.1 Key Responsibilities
1.1.1 System Design and Development
  • Design and develop traction power supply systems, including substations, overhead catenary systems (OCS), and third rail systems.
  • Perform load flow analysis, short-circuit studies, and voltage drop calculations.
  • Specify and select electrical equipment, including transformers, rectifiers, circuit breakers, and protective relays.
1.1.2 System Integration
  • Ensure integration of traction power systems with other railway systems, such as signalling, telecommunications, and track infrastructure.
  • Address interface challenges between traction power and rolling stock.
1.1.3 Project Management and Documentation
  • Prepare technical specifications, design documents, and project reports.
  • Collaborate with project managers to ensure adherence to timelines and budgets.
  • Participate in stakeholder meetings to discuss project progress and challenges.
1.1.4 Testing and Commissioning
  • Oversee the installation, testing, and commissioning of traction power systems.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant standards and regulations.
  • Perform troubleshooting and resolve technical issues during commissioning.
1.1.5 Maintenance and Reliability
  • Develop maintenance schedules and guidelines for traction power equipment.
  • Analyze system performance data to improve efficiency and reliability.
  • Propose upgrades and modifications to enhance system performance.
1.1.6 Regulatory Compliance
  • Ensure traction power systems comply with local, national, and international railway standards, such as IEEE, IEC, and EN standards.
  • Conduct risk assessments and safety analyses to minimize operational hazards.
Qualifications
1.2 Qualifications and Skills
1.2.1 Education

1.2.1 Education:

• o Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a related field (master’s preferred).

o Experience:

• 5-8 years of experience in railway traction power systems or a similar domain.

• Familiarity with railway electrification systems, including AC and DC traction power.

1.2.2 Technical Skills

•Proficiency in electrical system modelling software (e.g., ETAP, PSCAD, or similar).

•Strong knowledge of power system protection, SCADA systems, and relay coordination.

•Understanding of railway-specific standards, such as AREMA, BS EN, or UIC standards.

1.2.3 Soft Skills

•Excellent problem-solving and analytical abilities.

•Strong communication and teamwork skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams.

•Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

1.2.4 Preferred Qualifications

•Professional Engineer (PE) certification or equivalent.

•Knowledge of renewable energy integration with railway systems.

•Experience working with high-speed rail or metro systems.
