Job summary

Apple Chennai is seeking a Tooling Engineer to review tool concepts, layouts and DFM, and to lead new plastic tooling projects for a range of product designs. You’ll apply scientific molding, tolerance analysis and Six Sigma techniques to improve productivity and quality across molding, tooling and parts.

Role requires deep experience in plastic tool design, mold making and injection molding, with strong analytical and communication skills and willingness to travel regionally.

Qualifications

• Minimum 10 years experience in plastic tool design, mold making or injection molding.
• Minimum 5 years work experience as a tool designer.
• Familiar with tool fabrication processes for high volume precision tools.
• Strong knowledge of injection molding tool design and gate schemes.
• Systematic, analytical and strong troubleshooting skills.
• Experience with 3D modelling and simulation tools.

Responsibilities

• Review tool concept, layout and DFM for new designs.
• Lead development of new plastic tooling projects to meet performance and cosmetic requirements.
• Troubleshoot issues using scientific molding approaches and SPC/DOE methods.
• Drive productivity and quality improvements in tooling, molding and parts.

We are looking for a Tooling Engineer who will work closely with Supply Management, Product Design, Industrial Design, Quality and Manufacturing Engineering groups on new part designs.

Description

As a Tooling Engineer you would be responsible to review tool concept, layout and DFM. You would also lead the development of new plastic tooling projects to meet a wide range of product performance and cosmetic requirements

Responsibilities

• Trouble shooting issues in scientific approach with the use engineering tools/techniques such as decoupled molding, scientific molding approach, Tolerance Analysis, SPC, DOE and Six Sigma techniques
• Take the leading role in driving the improvement of productivity and quality of plastic part manufacturing, molding and tooling techniques
• Serve as Apple’s internal expert for tool design by leveraging a thorough understanding various material properties and tool component fabrication techniques
• Participate in new material development, new process development and innovation
• Work closely with Supply Management, Product Design, Industrial Design, Quality and Manufacturing Engineering groups on new part designs
• The role would involve frequent travel within the region

Minimum Qualifications

• Minimum 10 years' experience in plastic tool design, mold making or injection molding industry.
• Minimum 5 years work experience as a tool designer
• Familiar with tool fabrication processes and methodology for high volume precision tool
• Well-rounded in injection molding tool design, including various gate scheme, over-mold, multiple shots and etc
• Systematic, analytical & strong trouble-shooting skills

Preferred Qualifications

• Good knowledge of geometric dimensioning, hot runner systems application and scientific molding technique
• Familiar with 3D modelling/simulation software such as Pro/E, Unigraphics, Moldflow, Moldex3D or other software packages
• Good knowledge of geometric dimensioning, hot runner systems application and scientific molding technique
• Good knowledge in wide range of materials such as engineering plastic, liquid silicon rubber, thermal plastics, MIM, primer and epoxy

• Experience in managing and develop precision parts, high pace and mass volume products with multiple vendors in parallel
• Effective written, presentation, verbal and cross functional communication
