Job Description

ROLE SUMMARY: The Telecom Design Lead leads a multidisciplinary team of designers to plan, design, and deliver telecom services for EPC railway projects, covering infrastructure, rolling stock, and public systems. The role includes: Conceptualizing telecom system architecture and backbone networks; Designing data networks and wireless communication where cabling is limited; Ensuring network and data security against cyber threats; Developing embedded services: CCTV, access control, disaster prevention, public address systems, shared master clock, SCADA, and CBTC; Coordinating with civil, structural, signalling, electrical, rolling stock, telecom, power supply systems to ensure seamless integration.

The role requires expertise in telecom standards, protocols, devices (switches, routers, RTUs, PLCs/PLAs, multiplexers, antennae), and EMI/EMC interactions. Compliance with Indian and International standards like UIC, EN, AREMA, and RDSO standards is essential. Strong leadership, mentorship, problem-solving, and project management skills are critical to drive design innovation, value engineering, and digital workflows (BIM, parametric modelling, automation) to review deliverables to ensure quality, cost, and schedule adherence. Collaborate with internal stakeholders, external agencies, and clients to achieve project objectives. Support tendering, business development, and proposal preparation with technical expertise.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Domain Competency :
  • Support site configuration, RF planning, numbering plan design, and simulation studies.
  • Use BRT/OpenRail, AutoCAD, Civil 3D , FEM, and BIM for design optimization.
  • Collaborate with railway engineers and civil teams; provide technical support during construction and commissioning.

Telecom Architecture, Security, and Backbone:

  • Design telecom system architecture, including data networking, backbone transmission, and facility SCADA for railway infrastructure.
  • Ensure cyber security with firewalls and enforce all security policies across metro and mainline railway projects.

Telecom-Based Services:

  • Conceptualize and design services such as CCTV, access control, facility SCADA, public address/announcement, disaster warning, threat detection, and master clock systems.

Passenger Amenities and Utilities:

  • Address acoustics for public address systems, ergonomics for passenger information display, and UPS design for telecom subsystems.
  • Design systems using CDMA, GSM-R, LTE, Tetra, microwave IP, and EPABX technologies.

System Integration:

  • Ensure interoperability of Telecom subsystems (Radio, wifi Network, BTS), rolling stock onboard telecom systems, cab signaling, ATO/ATP, fare collection, power systems, and SCADA.
  • Integrate products from multiple vendors into unified telecom architecture.
  • Quantity Surveying/Estimation: Prepare detailed quantity take-offs, BOQs, and cost estimates. Analyze material requirements and subcontractor pricing to identify cost-saving opportunities.
  • System Integration: Ensure integration of Telecom with overhead Equipment (OHE) power supply installations (PSI), signalling, track, and rolling stock systems. Align electrical sections with signalling block sections and neutral section arrangements. Ensure interoperability of vendor products (routers, switches, servers, exchanges, data loggers).
  • ? Exposure : Hands-on experience with electromagnetic radiation analysis and mitigation , survey, interoperability guidelines, and field measurements for signaling and telecom circuits. Familiarity vendor devices like EI, routers exchanges, switches, and its integration. Exposure to ITU guidelines, FIDIC, EPC practices , and working with engineers, contractors, and designers and multidisciplinary coordination.
  • ? Leadership: Lead and mentor a team of engineers, providing technical guidance and fostering skill development. Inspire high performance and coordinate training initiatives.
  • ? Networking : Build industry relationships, influence clients.
  • Marketing and soft skills: S upport business development efforts by monitoring project pipelines and market trends.
  • ?? Processes: Implement and guide design and execution processes,
  • ? Execution and method Statements: Implement execution Methods Statements.
  • Digitization and Innovation: Implement digitization initiatives such as automation and digital twin generation.
  • ? Succession Planning: Identify and mentor successors to ensure continuity of expertise.
  • Engage with consultants, clients, multidisciplinary teams, regulators, and internal departments to ensure integrated, compliant, and feasible designs and garner approvals.
  • ? Participate in project meetings and Conduct site visits to provide technical support during construction.
  • ? Collaborate with internal departments and external companies to maintain updated knowledge and influence decisions.
  • ? Ensure all designs conform to applicable local, state, national regulations, and international industry codes.
  • ? Maintain design documentation, specifications, and presentations aligned with quality standards.
  • ? Maintain ISO processes and record-keeping.
  • ? Provide technical assistance to site engineers and verify design implementation through site visits
  • ? Review designs for accuracy, safety, and adherence to standards.
  • ? Analyse bid documents, prepare technical proposals, estimate quantities, and develop winning strategies.
  • ? Assist procurement teams with sourcing, vendor evaluation, contract negotiation, and supply chain coordination.
  • ? Estimate costs and recommend cost-effective design solutions.
