Hitachi ABB Power Grids in Bengaluru is seeking a Testing and Configuration Engineer to be responsible for the configuration of IEDs in EHV substations. The role involves developing HMIs, testing Control and Relay panels, and ensuring compliance with project requirements.
Applicants should have a BE in Electrical Engineering and at least 3 years of relevant experience, with strong knowledge in power systems and IEC 61850 standards. The position will also require frequent travel across India and overseas.
Responsible for configuration of IEDs used in EHV substations, development of HMIs using vendor-specific tools, and testing of CRP and SAS of EHV substations (above 132 kV). Ensure substation automation projects delivered by HEIL are configured per project requirements, tested, and commissioned on time while meeting HEIL quality and OHS standards. Meet or exceed customer expectations in testing and configuration of IEDs in line with project requirements.
How you’ll make an impact
As a testing and configuration engineer, you will configure IEDs, develop HMIs in line with project requirements, and test Control and Relay panels and Substation Automation System (SAS) deliveries. You will actively contribute to the testing team of Grid Automation Systems.
Execute project IED configurations and testing safely following all HEIL safety standards and customer requirements. Report hazards and near-misses for records and improvement.
Maintain optimal customer relations. Carry out IED configurations and testing of Control, Protection, and SAS panels per documented processes and checklists. Interact continuously with the Testing Lead and subject-matter experts to perform testing effectively.
Report project status, testing progress, and testing plans to the Testing Lead. Ensure efficient use of testing assets such as test kits and tools.
Ensure all project information is captured from the Testing Lead and that all IEDs are configured and tested in accordance with customer-approved drawings and ready for FAT testing.
Handover marked-up drawings to engineering for as-built documentation and submission to the customer to close the project.
Deliver final testing backups (CDs), Micro SCADA system backups, IET workplace backups, and other backups as per the checklist to the Lead.
Provide regular feedback to Engineering Project Management, Manufacturing and Quality to facilitate knowledge reuse. Follow processes such as test procedures, timesheets, and STAART meetings.
Maintain installed base numerical relays with minimal revisions by updating older revisions. Use the latest tools and software versions during IED configurations and testing.
Continuously learn and acquire expertise in various protection schemes and automation systems to support growth in the learning curve.
Ensure compliance with applicable external and internal regulations, procedures, and guidelines. Uphold Hitachi Energy’s values of safety and integrity.
Required: BE Electrical Engineering with a minimum of 3 years of experience in testing and commissioning of control and relay panels in projects above 132 kV. Strong knowledge of power systems and protection schemes.
Hands-on experience with 3-phase injection test kits (e.g., Omicron, Doble, Megger, Ponova).
Ability to understand schematics of control and relay panels and primary equipment interlocks. Willingness to travel frequently across India and overseas for at least the next 5 years.
Experience configuring HEIL IEDs and competitor IEDs per project requirements. Minimum 3 years of experience in commissioning SAS with IEC 61850, IEC 101, IEC 104, OPC, and Modbus protocols; strong knowledge of these communication protocols.
Good understanding of IEC 61850 standards, Ethernet, and serial communications. Competence in networking and configuring managed Ethernet switches.
Ability to work with project drawings and documents from Test Lead, prepare IED configurations, and report progress on a daily basis. Clear documentation of MOM points during customer FAT and handover of project backups after testing closure.
Proficiency in spoken and written English is required.
