Job summary

Applied Research Works India is seeking a System Administrator / Infrastructure Engineer to manage Linux systems, automate tasks with Bash, and operate in a Cloud/CI/CD driven environment. You will implement IaC with Terraform, provision AWS resources, and maintain reliable development, QA, staging, and production environments.

The role requires strong English, ownership, and willingness to work on-call when needed.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in science (required).
• Solid Linux system administration with CLI, filesystem, user/group, permissions, package management, services, and monitoring.
• Bash scripting and automation of routine tasks.
• Git workflows and infrastructure code management in Git repos.
• Infrastructure as Code with Terraform: state, modules, plans, applies.
• AWS exposure: EC2, S3, VPC, IAM, CloudWatch; provisioning and troubleshooting.
• CI/CD concepts and pipelines; Jenkins/GitHub Actions/GitLab flows.
• Environment provisioning for development, QA, staging, production.
• Networking concepts and basic troubleshooting.
• Professional English communication for US-based teams.

Job Description System Administrator / Infrastructure Engineer

Must Have Experience & Skills

• Bachelors degree in science.
• Strong hands-on experience with Linux system administration:
  • Strong command-line proficiency, including navigation, file editing/manipulation, process management, and troubleshooting.
  • Good understanding of Linux filesystem layout.
  • User, group, permissions, and file access management.
  • Software installation, patching, and upgrades using package management tools such as yum/rpm and apt/dpkg.
  • Service management, log analysis, process/resource troubleshooting, and system configuration.
  • Monitoring system performance, availability, and resource utilization.
• Practical experience with Bash scripting and automation of routine system administration tasks.

• Practical experience with Git and Git-based development workflows:
  • Working with repositories, branches, commits, merges, pull/merge requests, and resolving conflicts.
  • Ability to make changes to infrastructure and configuration code maintained in Git repositories.

• Hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC), preferably Terraform:
  • Writing and modifying Terraform configurations.
  • Managing infrastructure through Terraform plans and applies.
  • Understanding Terraform state, variables, modules, and reusable configurations.
  • Troubleshooting Terraform/IaC deployment issues.

• Practical experience with cloud infrastructure, preferably Amazon Web Services (AWS):
  • Hands-on experience with services such as EC2, EBS, S3, VPC, IAM, CloudWatch, and related AWS services.
  • Ability to provision, configure, troubleshoot, and maintain cloud-based environments.

• Working knowledge of CI/CD concepts and pipelines:
  • Understanding automated build, deployment, and release processes.
  • Ability to troubleshoot pipeline failures and work with application/infrastructure deployment workflows.
  • Experience working with CI/CD tools such as Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, AWS CodePipeline, or similar is desirable.

• Experience with environment provisioning and configuration:
  • Ability to build and configure development, QA, staging, and production environments.
  • Understanding of environment consistency, configuration management, deployment, and change management.
  • Ability to automate environment builds and repetitive infrastructure tasks.

• General knowledge of networking concepts and protocols and the ability to troubleshoot connectivity and application/network issues.

• Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot software, operating system, infrastructure, and hardware-related issues.

• Ability to communicate effectively in English (read/write/speak) to support US-based teams.

• Ability to collaborate with fellow employees and work odd hours / on-call schedules as required.

• Highly motivated and driven, with the ability to work independently, take ownership, and demonstrate strong work ethics.

Good to Have Experience & Skills

• Practical experience with an interpreted/scripting language such as Python, Ruby, or Perl.

• Experience with configuration management and automation tools, such as Ansible, Puppet, Chef, etc.

• Practical experience with DBMS technologies such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, etc., including familiarity with their respective client tools.

• Working knowledge of Windows desktops to troubleshoot tools/applications such as Eclipse, SQLyog, etc.

• Experience with containers and container orchestration, such as Docker and Kubernetes.

• Knowledge of monitoring, logging, and observability platforms.

• Knowledge of IT service management / ticketing systems for incident tracking, change management, and operational record keeping.
