Roles and Responsibilities
Sustainability Strategy & Program Development
- Develop and implement Torq's sustainability vision, strategy, and roadmap aligned with business objectives and commodity footprint (oilseeds, grains, edible nuts, coffee).
- Identify priority focus areas such as sustainable agriculture, traceability, climate resilience, farmer livelihoods, circularity, resource efficiency, and responsible sourcing.
- Establish sustainability goals, KPIs, and performance metrics; build sustainability governance processes and frameworks from scratch.
ESG Measurement, Reporting & Disclosure
- Design and implement systems to measure, track, and report environmental and social impact across operations and value chains.
- Lead ESG reporting and disclosures under frameworks such as GRI, CDP, and BRSR; respond to customer sustainability questionnaires and prepare for future compliance needs.
- Establish greenhouse gas accounting under the GHG Protocol (Scope 1, 2, and 3), recognising that the majority of a trading group's footprint sits in the supply chain.
- Develop sustainability dashboards and periodic reports for leadership and stakeholders.
Regulatory Compliance & Supply Chain Due Diligence
- Own compliance with the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) for in-scope commodities (coffee, soy), including geolocation-level traceability, due diligence statements, and supplier data systems for EU-bound cargo.
- Build and operate human rights and environmental due diligence (HREDD) processes across West African and Indian supply chains, covering labour rights and child labour risk.
- Monitor emerging regulations (e.g., CSDDD and equivalent regimes) and prepare the group ahead of applicability.
Lender & DFI Environmental and Social Requirements
- Develop and maintain the group's Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS) aligned with IFC Performance Standards.
- Lead the E&S workstream in due diligence by development finance institutions and trade finance lenders; implement and report on Environmental and Social Action Plans (ESAPs).
Certifications & Responsible Sourcing
- Identify, initiate, and manage certification pathways relevant to the product portfolio, such as Rainforest Alliance, Fairtrade, Organic, and FSSC 22000.
- Work with origination and processing teams to embed certification and responsible sourcing requirements at farm gate and factory level.
Consultant & Stakeholder Management
- Liaise with external sustainability consultants, ESG advisory firms, certification bodies, and impact assessment agencies; manage assessments, audits, and reporting projects.
- Ensure implementation of consultant recommendations across relevant teams.
Partnerships & External Engagement
- Build and manage relationships with NGOs, industry associations, research institutions, certification agencies, and government bodies.
- Identify and manage sustainability-related partnerships, grants, and collaboration opportunities; represent Torq at industry forums, conferences, and sustainability events.
CSR & Foundation Coordination
- Coordinate the group's CSR programme, including compliance with Section 135 of the Indian Companies Act where applicable, and support the grant-making activities of the Torq Impact Foundation.
Internal Awareness & Capability Building
- Champion sustainability across the organisation; conduct awareness sessions and workshops for employees and stakeholders.
- Collaborate with the MarComm team to strengthen Torq's sustainability narrative, thought leadership, and brand positioning; support development of sustainability-related communication materials and impact stories.
Previous Experience and Skill Sets
- 5 to 7 years of experience in sustainability, ESG, or related functions, of which at least 2 years in Agri-commodity, food & beverage, or FMCG supply chains.
- Demonstrated experience building sustainability or ESG programmes, frameworks, or reporting systems from scratch (not only operating inherited frameworks).
- Experience working with sustainability consultants, ESG advisory firms, certification bodies, or lender/DFI E&S teams.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
- Master's degree in Sustainability, Environmental Science, Agriculture, or a related field, OR equivalent experience.
- Working knowledge of sustainability and ESG frameworks such as GRI, CDP, BRSR, GHG Protocol, and IFC Performance Standards; familiarity with EUDR requirements strongly preferred.
- Strong project management and stakeholder management skills; ability to work independently and build processes from scratch.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
- Willingness to travel regularly to West Africa and within India; working proficiency in French is an advantage.
