Job summary

Nokia in Bengaluru, India, seeks an experienced optical transport architect to own requirements and architecture for Layer0 feature areas, driving success from concept to release. You will guide development teams, define interfaces, and shape data models for robust, end-to-end systems.

You will lead cross-functional teams, mentor engineers, and represent the capabilities in customer engagements, ensuring high-quality architecture and delivery in a global environment.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Telecommunications, Optics or related field + 5+ years in optical transport.
• M.Sc. in same fields + 6+ years in optical transport.
• Deep understanding of fiber transmission effects and OSNR evolution.
• Experience with coherent transponders, EDFAs, Raman and ROADM/WSS.
• Knowledge of OTN, Ethernet and SDN/GMPLS control plane.
• Ability to define fault, performance and configuration management for multi-layer networks.

Responsibilities

• Shape product features and requirements with Product Line Management, recommending solutions for new feature requests.
• Own system requirements, architecture specs and acceptance criteria for feature areas, guiding development teams.
• Drive system architecture for feature areas including interfaces and data models.
• Architect and validate distributed, link-level control loops (power, gain, tilt, transient suppression).
• Define system design rules and optical performance models (power profiles, OSNR).
• Partner with documentation to describe features and concepts for customers.
• Lead cross-functional feature teams to build consensus on architecture and priorities.
• Represent feature areas in technical engagements and demos with customers.
• Mentor engineers and architects on the team.

How You Will Contribute And What You Will Learn

In this role, you will own the requirements and architecture of assigned Layer0 feature areas, and be accountable for their technical success from concept through release. Your key responsibilities will include:

• Shaping product features and requirements with Product Line Management, and recommending solutions to new feature requests based on feasibility, cost and risk
• Owning the system requirements, architecture specifications and acceptance criteria for these feature areas, and guiding development teams through implementation and validation
• Driving the system architecture of these feature areas with fellow architects and development leads, including interfaces and data models
• Architecting and validating the distributed, link-level control loops in these feature areas, such as power control, gain and tilt equalization and transient suppression
• Defining the system design rules and optical performance models these feature areas rely on, such as target power profiles and OSNR estimation
• Partnering with the product documentation team to describe features and operational concepts for customers
• Leading cross-functional feature teams to build consensus on architecture and technical concepts, and influencing their plans and priorities
• Representing these feature areas in technical engagements and demonstrations with key customers
• Mentoring engineers and architects on the team

Key Skills And Experience

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

• Deep understanding of fiber transmission effects, such as power and OSNR evolution and fiber nonlinearities, and their impact on optical line system design
• Hands-on experience with optical networking equipment, including coherent transponders, EDFAs, Raman amplifiers and ROADM/WSS, and knowledge of OTN, Ethernet and SDN/GMPLS control plane
• Experience designing and validating closed- and open-loop, link-level control algorithms and optical performance monitoring to optimize end-to-end transmission
• Broad systems expertise, with a track record of writing and leading high-quality requirements and architecture specifications for robust, reliable end-to-end systems
• Extensive experience defining fault, performance and configuration management, service provisioning and control plane requirements for multi-layer networking products, especially at L0 and L1
• Working knowledge of data models for operating and monitoring optical networks, including YANG, ONF TAPI, OpenROADM and OpenConfig
• Familiarity with the SONiC Optical Transport Network Working Group, including the Optical Transport Abstraction Interface (OTAI)
• Sound, independent judgment on ambiguous and novel technical problems
• Excellent communication and presentation skills for internal and customer audiences
• Highly motivated collaborator, effective in cross-functional, cross-cultural and international teams

Education & Experience Requirements:

• Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Telecommunications, Optics, Physics or a related field + minimum 5 years of relevant work experience in optical transport or a related telecommunications area
• M.Sc. in the same fields + minimum 6 years of relevant work experience in optical transport or a related telecommunications area
