Job summary

Matillion is hiring a Staff Software Engineer for the Billing team in Hyderabad. You will be the senior technical voice, guiding day‑to‑day delivery, unblocking the team, and acting as the main technical contact for the Engineering Manager and Product Manager. Hybrid work: four days in the Hyderabad office, one day remote.

You will lead on third‑party integrations, mature microservices and observability, and collaborate with Finance, GTM, and Data Science teams on Maia features.

Qualifications

• Proficient in Java with OO design and scalable systems.
• Full-stack experience with React in a production environment.
• Hands-on with CI/CD tooling and agile methods (Kanban/Scrum).
• Experience with AWS, GCP or Azure and billing integrations.

Responsibilities

• Act as technical lead for the Billing team, guiding two junior engineers and one QA engineer.
• Own integrations with third‑party billing and marketplace platforms from design to deployment.
• Review code to meet engineering standards with a Product, Quality, DevOps and Security mindset.
• Serve as subject matter expert in billing architecture, triage incidents, and support on-call tasks.
• Mentor team members and contribute to ML capability work with Data Science for Maia.

About the role

We're looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join our Billing team in Hyderabad, where you'll be the most senior technical voice on a team of five, guiding day-to-day delivery, unblocking the team, and acting as the main technical point of contact for the Engineering Manager and Product Manager. This role is based from our Hyderabad office four days a week, with one day working from home.

You’ll lead on third‑party and marketplace integrations, help mature our microservices and observability practices, and work at pace across two‑week sprints. You’ll also collaborate closely with Finance, GTM and Data Science teams, including contributing to exciting ML capability work for Maia.

What you will be doing

• Acting as technical lead for the Billing team, guiding and unblocking two junior engineers, two mid‑level engineers and one QA engineer, and leading design reviews to set technology direction.
• Owning integrations with third‑party billing and marketplace platforms, with significant hands‑on time across production services from design through to deployment and ongoing support.
• Reviewing code and guiding the team to Matillion's engineering standards with a Product, Quality, DevOps and Security mindset, while translating sprint requirements from the Engineering Manager and Product Manager into clear technical direction.
• Becoming the subject matter expert in the billing domain and architecture, supporting triage and incident response, participating in out‑of‑hours on‑call, and proactively engaging customer‑facing colleagues to avoid exposing customers to issues.
• Mentoring team members, fostering a culture that aligns engineering and product strategy, and contributing to cross‑team work such as ML capability development with Data Science for Maia.

What we are looking for

• Proficient in Java (core priority for this role) with a solid grounding in object‑oriented design, distributed systems and best practices such as testability, observability, scalability and security; working React knowledge in a full‑stack capacity.
• Experience across the full software development lifecycle via CI/CD tooling and agile methodologies (Kanban/Scrum), with hands‑on experience in at least one major cloud platform (AWS, GCP or Azure).
• Proven experience integrating with multiple third‑party or marketplace platforms; billing or usage‑based/credit‑consumption experience is a bonus, not essential.
• A clear bias for action, leading initiatives and mentoring others, with the autonomy to solve problems independently and the inquisitiveness to dig into root causes rather than just symptoms.
• A proactive, self‑sufficient technical leader with integrity and a growth mindset, comfortable representing the team cross‑functionally and staying calm under pressure during incidents.
