Job summary

Visa is seeking a Staff Software Engineer in Bengaluru to lead and contribute to high-quality software across a cross-functional Agile team. You will own features end-to-end, influence system architecture, and mentor engineers while delivering scalable services.

You will design and build Java/J2EE applications with Spring Boot, create resilient microservices, and drive automation, CI/CD, and observability to ensure operational excellence in production.

Job Description

The Opportunity

As a Staff Software Engineer, you will be a technical leader within a cross‑functional Agile team, responsible not only for building high‑quality software, but also for influencing design decisions, engineering standards, and best practices across the team.

You will work on complex, distributed systems and automation services that are foundational to Visa's infrastructure reliability. You are expected to operate with a high degree of autonomy, translate ambiguous requirements into robust technical solutions, and provide guidance to other engineers through design reviews, code reviews, and mentoring.

The Work You’ll Do

Ownership & Design

• Take end‑to‑end ownership of features and services, from design and implementation through deployment and lifecycle support.
• Contribute to and influence system architecture, API design, and technology choices, ensuring solutions are scalable, secure, and resilient.
• Participate actively in code reviews and design discussions, providing thoughtful feedback and driving alignment with engineering best practices.

Software Development

• Design, develop, test, and maintain high‑quality Java-J2EE applications using modern frameworks (Spring Boot, Hibernate) and microservices architectures.
• Build and evolve responsive, production‑grade user interfaces using modern frontend frameworks (React, Angular, or Vue.js).
• Drive engineering excellence through clean code, automated testing, CI-CD pipelines, and operational readiness.

Delivery & Operations

• Contribute to CI-CD pipelines and automated delivery processes using tools such as Git, Jenkins, and containerized environments (Docker).
• Support production systems, participate in incident resolution, and contribute to continuous improvements in stability and operational excellence.
• Collaborate with peers across Global Network Engineering and Visa Technology teams to ensure smooth integration and delivery.
• Proactively identify technical risks, performance bottlenecks, and reliability gaps, and drive solutions to address them.
• Work closely with Product, Architecture, SRE, Security, and QA teams to translate business and platform requirements into technical solutions.
• Provide technical mentorship to junior engineers through pairing, reviews, and knowledge sharing.
• Influence team‑level and org‑level engineering best practices, including observability, resiliency, and automation.

This is a hybrid position. Expectation of days in the office will be confirmed by your Hiring Manager.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

5+ years of relevant work experience with a Bachelor's Degree or at least 2 years of work experience with an Advanced degree (e.g. Masters, MBA, JD, MD) or 0 years of work experience with a PhD, OR 8+ years of relevant work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• 5+ years of relevant work experience with a Bachelor's Degree or at least 2 years of work experience with an Advanced degree (e.g. Masters, MBA, JD, MD) or 0 years of work experience with a PhD, OR 8+ years of relevant work experience.
• 5+ years of relevant professional software engineering experience with a Bachelor's degree, or equivalent practical experience with an advanced degree.
• Proven ability to independently deliver complex software solutions in a production environment.
• Experience working on highly available infrastructure‑focused systems.
• Prior experience mentoring engineers or acting as a technical lead on projects.
• Familiarity with observability, resiliency engineering, and automation in distributed systems.

The Skills You Bring -

• Strong, hands‑on experience with Java-J2EE, Spring Boot, and related enterprise frameworks.
• Solid experience building distributed systems using RESTful APIs and microservices architectures.
• Experience integrating AI-ML or Generative AI capabilities into production software systems
• Experience using AI‑powered tools to improve coding, debugging, testing, documentation, and refactoring while maintaining engineering rigor.
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and cloud‑native development patterns.
• Strong understanding of software design patterns, data structures, and system design principles.
• Experience with automation and testing frameworks (e.g., Selenium, REST Assured, Cypress, Groovy, Python).
• Demonstrated ability to perform root cause analysis and drive resolution of complex production issues.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to influence technical outcomes across teams.
