Job summary

BMC Software, Inc. is seeking an experienced z/OS Systems Programmer to join the Mainframe Infrastructure team in an enterprise setting.

You will ensure stability, security, and performance of core IBM Z operating systems and subsystems, with opportunities to contribute to mainframe modernization while supporting on-call production tasks. The role emphasizes SMP/E, JES2/DFSMS/TSO E/ISPF administration, and automation using Python, REXX, and Ansible.

Qualifications

• 5 to 10 years of solid, hands-on experience as a z/OS Systems Programmer in an enterprise production environment.
• Deep knowledge of SMP/E for software installation, patching, and maintenance.
• Comprehensive understanding of z/OS architecture, IPL sequences, and Unix System Services (USS).
• Experience with system utilities and performance monitoring tools (e.g., BMC AMI tools, RMF, or equivalent).
• Strong proficiency in writing and maintaining Python, REXX and JCL.
• Experience with z/OS Management Facility (z/OSMF) workflows and software management deployment.
• Familiarity with infrastructure automation via Ansible for IBM Z or Python on z/OS.
• Knowledge of integrating mainframe environments into modern DevOps CI/CD pipelines.

Responsibilities

• OS Installation & Maintenance: lead z/OS installation, configuration, customization, and migration of z/OS and IBM software using SMP/E processing.
• System Customization: manage IPL parameters, Parmlib/Proclib configurations, and master catalog management.
• Sysplex Management: maintain Parallel Sysplex environments, including CF structures and Shared DASD configurations.
• Subsystem Support: provide systems-level administration for JES2, DFSMS, TSO/E, and ISPF.
• Automation & Scripting: develop, debug, and maintain system automation scripts and utilities using Python, Ansible, REXX, CLIST, and JCL.
• Problem Determination: perform root-cause analysis on system failures.
• Production Support: participate in on-call rotation for Tier-3 production issues.

BMC is looking for an experienced z/OS Systems Programmer with 5 to 10 years of hands-on technical expertise to join our Mainframe Infrastructure team. The primary focus of this role is to ensure the stability, security, and high performance of our core IBM Z operating systems and subsystems. While this role relies heavily on traditional, deep systems programming capabilities, the ideal candidate will also have the opportunity to participate in and support our ongoing mainframe modernization

• OS Installation & Maintenance: Lead the installation, configuration, customization, and migration of z/OS operating systems and related IBM software using SMP/E processing.
• System Customization: Manage system initialization (IPL parameters), Parmlib/Proclib configurations, and master catalog management.
• Sysplex Management: Maintain and support Parallel Sysplex environments, including Coupling Facility (CF) structures and Shared DASD configurations.
• Subsystem Support: Provide systems-level administration and configuration for core components, including JES2, DFSMS, TSO/E, and ISPF.
• Automation & Scripting: Develop, debug, and maintain system automation scripts and utilities using Python, Ansible, REXX, CLIST, and JCL.
• Problem Determination: Perform root-cause analysis on system failures.
• Production Support: Participate in an on-call rotation to provide Tier-3 technical support for critical production infrastructure issues.

To ensure you’re set up for success, you will bring the following skillset & experience:

• Experience: 5 to 10 years of solid, hands-on experience as a z/OS Systems Programmer in an enterprise production environment.
• Software Management: Proven, deep knowledge of SMP/E for software installation, patching, and maintenance.
• Core Architecture: Comprehensive understanding of z/OS architecture, IPL sequences, and Unix System Services (USS).
• Tooling: Practical experience with system utilities and performance monitoring tools (e.g., BMC AMI tools, RMF, or equivalent).
• Scripting: Strong proficiency in writing and maintaining Python, REXX and JCL.
