Job description

Job Description:

Job Summary/Objective

Serves as a hands‑on technical leader who designs, implements, and continuously improves OEC’s (OEConnection’s) enterprise and cloud network infrastructure. Works within on‑premises environments — routing, switching, firewall, and load balancing — and modern cloud networking across AWS and Azure, where OEC’s SaaS platform serves automotive dealers and OEMs globally. Drives network modernization, leads architecture decisions, establishes Infrastructure as Code and automation standards, and serves as the primary escalation point for complex network problems. Mentors junior engineers and shapes the long‑term direction of the network practice.

Key Responsibilities & Duties (essential to the job)
  1. Designs, deploys, and operates complex LAN/WAN and data center switching environments (Cisco Nexus, Catalyst, Meraki) and administers firewalls, VPN, and F5 BIG‑IP load balancers supporting production and customer‑facing workloads.
  2. Architects and manages cloud networking in AWS and Azure — including VPCs, VNets, Transit Gateways, ExpressRoute/Direct Connect, hybrid BGP connectivity, NSGs, and cloud‑native security controls.
  3. Authors and maintains network Infrastructure as Code using Terraform; enforces a GitOps workflow where all cloud network changes are version‑controlled, peer‑reviewed, and deployed via CI/CD pipeline.
  4. Builds and maintains automation tooling in Python and/or PowerShell for configuration compliance, inventory management, and operational efficiency; integrates Ansible or NAPALM for on‑premises device management.
  5. Designs and owns network observability — monitoring coverage, alerting thresholds, and on‑call escalation paths using Datadog, Azure Monitor, and AWS CloudWatch; leads post‑incident reviews and drive improvements.
  6. Leads network modernization initiatives including SD‑WAN adoption, zero‑trust segmentation, and cloud‑first connectivity; produces HLD/LLD architecture documentation and presents recommendations to leadership.
  7. Serves as the senior escalation point for complex network incidents; conducts root cause analysis, documents preventive actions, and maintains the team’s runbooks and standard operating procedures.
  8. Mentors Network Engineers and junior staff through pairing, code review, and knowledge‑transfer; evaluates new platforms and vendors through structured proof‑of‑concept testing.
Education

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is required, with a focus in Computer Science, Information Technology, Network Engineering, or related discipline. In the absence of a degree, equivalent work experience directly related to the key responsibilities of the role will be considered as a substitute for the degree.

Experience, Skills and Key Competencies

At least 12+ years of progressive network engineering experience with demonstrated depth across traditional enterprise networking and modern cloud environments. 5+ years with Cisco platforms (Nexus, Catalyst, ASA/FTD, Meraki) in production. 4+ years designing and managing cloud networking in AWS and/or Azure, including hybrid connectivity. 3+ years writing Infrastructure as Code for network resources using Terraform or equivalent. 3+ years of network automation or scripting (Python, PowerShell, Ansible). 2+ years of BGP in production, including route filtering, path manipulation, and failover design.

Work background must include the following technical skills:

Required — Day‑One Capabilities
  • Cisco routing & switching: BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, SD‑WAN, Nexus VPC/VXLAN, Catalyst, Meraki
  • Cisco ASA/FTD firewalls, AnyConnect VPN, zone‑based policy
  • F5 BIG‑IP (LTM/GTM): virtual servers, iRules, SSL offload
  • AWS networking: VPC, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect, Route 53, ALB/NLB, Security Groups
  • Azure networking: VNet, Virtual WAN, ExpressRoute, NSG, Azure Firewall, App Gateway
  • Terraform (IaC) — version‑controlled, peer‑reviewed network deployments
  • Python and/or PowerShell for network automation and scripting
  • Git, GitHub/Azure DevOps, CI/CD pipeline participation
  • Network Services: DHCP, DNS, NTP, SNMP, NetFlow/IPFIX, TACACS+/RADIUS

  • Terraform module library built and maintained for multi‑team use
  • Container networking (Kubernetes CNI, service mesh)
  • Azure Bicep, ARM templates, or AWS CloudFormation
  • SolarWinds, PRTG, or Grafana for on‑premises observability
  • Datadog, Azure Monitor, or AWS CloudWatch for network observability
  • AI‑assisted tooling (Claude, GitHub Copilot) in engineering workflows

Must also be able to demonstrate the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

    • Able to communicate technical architecture and recommendations clearly to both engineering peers and non‑technical management.
    • Can effectively apply structured root cause analysis to complex, multi‑layer network issues spanning on‑premises and cloud environments.
    • Self-directed work style with strong ownership and the ability to lead projects end‑to‑end with minimal supervision, while keeping stakeholders informed.
    • Skilled at producing high‑quality documentation — architecture diagrams, runbooks, and IaC module docs — as a standard work output.
    • Mentorship mindset; invests in developing junior team members through pairing, review, and knowledge sharing.
    • Flexible and adaptable approach to work, and can easily adjust to shifts in priorities as the needs of the business change.
