The Role

The Software Development Manager (SDM) at Source.One is a senior engineering leadership role that blends hands‑on technical expertise with strategic guidance. The SDM acts as the connective tissue between individual execution and organisational engineering strategy, taking ownership of multiple product verticals, driving technical architecture decisions, and writing production‑grade code while inspiring a team of senior engineers. The goal is to build a foundation for future progression to an AVP of Technology as the organisation scales.

Key Responsibilities (The How)

Technical Architecture & System Design

• Own and drive the end‑to‑end technical architecture for multiple product verticals, from conceptualisation through design, development, and deployment.
• Define scalable, secure, and maintainable system‑design principles across backend, frontend, and data layers.
• Be a decisive voice in architectural reviews and tech‑stack decisions, ensuring alignment between business goals and engineering choices.
• Proactively identify technical debt and lead initiatives to address it before it becomes a scaling risk.

Full‑Stack Engineering Ownership

• Contribute actively to the code‑based design, build, and review of production‑ready web and mobile applications using the MERN stack and Flutter.
• Architect and deliver secure, high‑performance backend systems, REST APIs, and internal tooling aligned with real business workflows.
• Ensure engineering excellence across code quality, testing, CI/CD, monitoring, performance optimisation, and security practices.

AI/ML Integration & Intelligent Systems

• Lead the integration of AI and ML capabilities, including LLM‑based systems, intelligent search, predictive analytics, automated data enrichment, and AI‑assisted workflows into production applications.
• Champion applied AI initiatives across procurement, operations, reporting, and support functions.
• Stay ahead of emerging AI/ML tooling and evaluate feasibility for adoption within Source.One’s architecture.

Team Leadership & People Management

• Lead, mentor, and manage a team of senior software engineers—setting clear expectations, driving accountability, and fostering a high‑performance engineering culture.
• Coach engineers to operate with ownership and autonomy so that work is done through the team, not just alongside it.
• Conduct regular one‑on‑ones, performance reviews, and growth conversations, identifying skill gaps and supporting team development proactively.
• Attract, retain, and grow engineering talent as the organisation scales.

Multi‑Vertical Delivery Ownership

• Oversee the parallel development of multiple product verticals, managing timelines, dependencies, and engineering priorities across teams.
• Work closely with product, operations, analytics, and business leadership to translate ambiguous requirements into clear, executable engineering plans.
• Drive delivery while balancing speed, scalability, and technical correctness, without sacrificing quality.

Technology Strategy & Roadmap

• Contribute to the long‑term technology roadmap in collaboration with the Head of Technology and CTO.
• Bring structure and rigour to engineering planning, sprint cycles, OKRs, architectural decision records, and cross‑functional alignment.
• Represent the engineering perspective in leadership discussions, translating business context back to the team.

The Ideal Candidate (The Who)

• 4 to 8 years of hands‑on software engineering experience, with at least 2 years in a formal or de‑facto leadership role; has managed or closely mentored senior engineers, not just junior developers.
• Deep proficiency in JavaScript (ES6+), React.js, Node.js, MongoDB, Flutter, and PostgreSQL—able to dive into code when necessary.
• Systems‑centric thinker with experience in distributed systems, database design, cloud platforms (AWS/Azure/GCP), API design, and performance at scale.
• Hands‑on experience integrating AI/ML APIs, LLM‑based systems, or intelligent automation into production‑grade applications, with a clear sense of where AI adds value.
• Strong people‑management skills: can unblock engineers, hold them accountable, and nurture a culture of ownership.
• Comfortable managing parallel workstreams across different product areas, maintaining depth while structuring ambiguity.
• Pursues an AVP‑track trajectory, thinking beyond the team backlog to organisational responsibility.
