Qualifications

Job description

To design, develop, validate, and maintain the core software systems powering robotic-assisted surgical platforms. The role involves developing real-time, safety-critical applications, implementing robotic control and visualization software, integrating hardware and software subsystems, and ensuring compliance with global medical device software standards.

The engineer will work at the intersection of robotics, medical device software engineering, real-time systems, and surgical technology to deliver reliable, high-performance software solutions for next‑generation surgical robotic systems.

Key Responsibilities
1. Surgical Robotics Software Development
  • Develop, maintain, and optimize software applications for robotic‑assisted surgical systems.
  • Design and implement robust desktop and operator‑console applications using C# and WPF.
  • Develop software modules for real‑time robotic control, visualization, monitoring, and user interaction.
  • Ensure high performance, reliability, and maintainability of software deployed in safety‑critical environments.
2. Robotic Control & Real‑Time Systems
  • Implement software interfaces for robotic motion control, sensor feedback, and actuator coordination.
  • Develop multi‑threaded and real‑time software components for deterministic robotic operation.
  • Support integration with Real‑Time Operating Systems (RTOS) and high‑performance control frameworks.
  • Optimize latency, responsiveness, and system stability for surgical workflows.
3. Robotics Integration & Communication
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electronics, firmware, and controls engineering teams to integrate robotic subsystems.
  • Develop and maintain interfaces using ROS (Robot Operating System) and industrial communication protocols.
  • Support integration of sensors, motors, encoders, foot pedals, imaging devices, and other surgical peripherals.
  • Validate end‑to‑end software and hardware interoperability during system integration activities.
4. Software Architecture & Technical Design
  • Participate in software architecture definition and technical design reviews.
  • Apply Object‑Oriented Design principles, design patterns, and modular software architecture practices.
  • Evaluate new technologies, frameworks, and architectural approaches to improve product capabilities.
  • Contribute to long‑term scalability and maintainability of the surgical robotics software platform.
5. Verification, Validation & Quality Assurance
  • Develop unit tests, integration tests, and verification procedures for software modules.
  • Perform debugging, root‑cause analysis, and corrective action implementation.
  • Support system‑level verification, validation, and reliability testing activities.
  • Participate in risk analysis and software hazard mitigation activities for safety‑critical functions.
6. Regulatory Compliance & Documentation
  • Prepare software design documents, test reports, traceability records, and technical specifications.
  • Ensure development activities comply with IEC 62304, ISO 13485, CE MDR, and FDA medical device requirements.
  • Participate in design reviews, verification reviews, and regulatory audit preparation activities.
  • Maintain accurate documentation throughout the software development lifecycle.
7. Cross‑Functional Collaboration & Innovation
  • Work closely with robotics, systems, clinical, and quality teams to deliver integrated surgical solutions.
  • Support prototype development, laboratory testing, and clinical evaluation activities.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and innovation programs within the Surgical Robotics R&D team.
  • Mentor junior engineers and share technical knowledge where required.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Robotics, Electronics, Mechatronics, or a related engineering discipline.
  • 2+ years of experience in robotics software, medical device software, industrial automation, or real‑time system development.
  • Strong proficiency in C# and WPF.
  • Strong understanding of Object‑Oriented Programming (OOP), design patterns, and software architecture principles.
  • Experience with ROS (Robot Operating System) and robotic software integration.
  • Knowledge of robotics fundamentals including kinematics, dynamics, and control systems.
  • Experience working with RTOS or real‑time software environments.
  • Strong debugging, analytical, and problem‑solving skills.
Preferred / Strong Advantage Skills
  • Experience in surgical robotics or regulated medical device software development.
  • Knowledge of IEC 62304, ISO 13485, ISO 14971, FDA 21 CFR Part 820, and CE MDR requirements.
  • Experience with C++, Python, EtherCAT, CAN, TCP/IP, or other industrial communication protocols.
  • Exposure to motion control systems, robotic manipulators, or image‑guided surgery platforms.
  • Experience working in multidisciplinary robotics or healthcare technology projects.
Nice to Have
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and DevOps practices.
  • Familiarity with computer vision or medical imaging integration.
  • Experience with simulation environments such as Gazebo, Isaac Sim, or Unity/Unreal for robotics testing.
  • Participation in product commercialization or regulatory submissions for medical devices.
