Job description

Short Term Consultant for Renewable Energy Programme

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), founded in 1980, is a public-interest research and advocacy organisation based in New Delhi. CSE plays a critical role in analysing developments and challenges in the fast-changing renewable energy sector. The transition to clean and renewable energy is essential for increasing energy access and supporting sustainable growth, and it remains one of the primary solutions to mitigate the severe impacts of climate change.

We are building a team that will work on various aspects of energy policy, technologies, end‑use applications, energy accessibility, and equitable resource use.

About the Programme

CSE’s Renewable Energy Programme (REP) is committed to advancing the study of the most pressing issues related to clean energy development in India, as well as the interventions that shape our response to energy access, energy security, and sustainable development. With this principle in mind, the renewable energy team conducts and disseminates research on emerging clean energy policies and technologies and their practical adoption. The team also helps build the capacities of various stakeholders through capacity building programmes and workshops to create multipliers.

Acknowledging our role as members of the global community, we are the change‑makers who work to raise awareness about resources, technologies, and practices beyond purely financial considerations.

Roles and Responsibilities

We are looking for an individual who will be an integral member of CSE’s Renewable Energy team and will proactively undertake research and data analysis to promote renewable energy, particularly in the context of implementing renewable energy policies at the state level and understanding challenges related to compliance and data reliability.

To increase the share of renewable energy in both installed capacity and the generation mix, it is essential that states and their agencies successfully implement renewable energy schemes. CSE aims to support states in achieving this goal. This particular role will focus on the implementation in the state of Uttar Pradesh by setting up a Project Management Unit (PMU) at the office of the government implementation agency in Lucknow.

As part of the team, the selected candidate will be a member of the Project Management Unit based in Lucknow. The candidate will report to the Programme Manager based in Delhi, who will be responsible for the project.

No. of Positions: 02

Joining: Immediate

Job Profile

The primary responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Credible data collection, collation, and analysis related to renewable energy policies in the state and their compliance status.
  • Travelling across the state to meet regional stakeholders, collect data, and document the challenges and barriers faced in implementing and complying with the schemes.
  • Organising regional and state‑level meetings and workshops for clean energy stakeholders to initiate dialogue, gather inputs and feedback, share findings, and strengthen discussions around state policies, implementation challenges and compliance.
  • Working alongside the CSE Delhi team on research and data analysis that will be translated into reports, fact sheets and other outputs for state agencies.
  • Advocating for and disseminating project learnings through Down To Earth, as well as through multimedia and social media platforms to share emerging information and data.
  • Collaborating effectively with colleagues to achieve organisational goals; demonstrating a willingness to learn, and placing team objectives above personal agendas.

Qualification and Experience

  • Graduates preferably with a background in energy, engineering, data analytics, environmental science, sustainable development, or other relevant fields.
  • A minimum of 1–3 years of relevant work experience, preferably with some knowledge of India’s renewable energy landscape.
  • Experience in data research, analysis, and writing is desirable.
  • Writing and communicating in English will be preferred.
  • Proficiency in the MS Office suite; knowledge of data visualisation will be an advantage.
  • Must be a team player and open to frequent travel within the state.
  • The position requires adherence to time‑bound deliverables.
