Job summary

About the Role:

The Shadow Teacher provides dedicated 1:1 support to an assigned learner with additional
learning needs. Working with the Homeroom Teacher and Wellbeing and Learning Support team,
the Shadow Teacher helps the learner access classroom activities, participate with peers and
develop greater independence.

Key Responsibilities

• Follow the learner's IEP or support plan and implement agreed accommodations and strategies.
• Break instructions and tasks into manageable steps and use visuals, schedules, models or other learning supports as required.
• Support participation in lessons, group work, play, transitions, assemblies, break times and school activities.
• Use positive and proactive strategies to support attention, communication, emotional regulation and sensory needs.
• Encourage peer interaction, learner choice, self-advocacy and independence.
• Use the least level of prompting required and gradually reduce support when appropriate.
• Record brief, objective observations and progress toward agreed learning and wellbeing goals.
• Share relevant information with the Learning Support and teaching team.

Collaboration and Professional Conduct

• Work collaboratively with the Homeroom Teacher, specialist teachers and Wellbeing and Learning Support team.
• Prepare or adapt materials only in consultation with the responsible teacher or Learning Support Team.
• Maintain learner confidentiality, dignity and professional boundaries at all times.
• Follow school procedures for parent communication, safeguarding, health and safety, and behaviour support.
• Participate in relevant meetings, briefings and professional learning as directed by the school.

Qualifications and Experience

• Diploma or degree in Special Education, Psychology, Education, Child Development or another relevant field.
• Experience supporting children with additional learning needs is preferred.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with teachers and parents.
• A patient, caring, reliable, and proactive approach to supporting learners.
• Familiarity with the IB Primary Years Programme or international-school settings is desirable.
