Job summary

Monks is seeking a Senior Technical Artist to join our Unreal Engine team. You will bridge artists and the engine, focusing on pipeline development, shading, and asset integration to maintain the project’s artistic vision within technical constraints.

You will collaborate with artists to ensure high-quality 3D assets, materials, and tools, while reviewing workflows and driving improvements across the art pipeline.

Qualifications

• Solid experience in Unreal Engine blueprints and shader development.
• Strong understanding of material graphs, PBR workflows, and real‑time rendering.
• Experience building tools and extensions inside Unreal Engine.
• Ability to create configurators or automation tools for art pipelines.
• Excellent problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with generalists to create 3D art and integrate it into the Unreal Engine.
• Support artists with the 3D art pipeline and engine tools.
• Develop high‑quality 3D assets focusing on materials, shaders and surface realism.
• Identify workflow improvements and develop pipeline tools and extensions.
• Troubleshoot issues within the Unreal Engine asset pipeline and coordinate with QA.
• Ensure documentation is up to date for artists and technical teams.
• Inspire the art team to optimize workflows and processes.

Monks is looking for a Senior Technical Artist to join our team. This role focuses on pipeline development, shading and artist support, acting as a bridge between artists and our Unreal Engine pipeline.

You will play a key role in ensuring that art content and features are seamlessly integrated into the engine while maintaining the project’s artistic vision and respecting technical constraints.

Role & Responsibilities

• Work with generalist to create 3D art and bring it into the engine
• Support artists in using the 3D art pipeline and user-facing engine tools
• Collaborate with artists to create high-quality 3D assets with a strong emphasis on materials, shaders, and surface realism
• Review creative workflows and identify opportunities for tool and pipeline improvements
• Develop Unreal Engine art pipeline tools and extensions with a focus on usability and efficiency
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues within the Unreal Engine asset pipeline
• Work closely with artists and QA to diagnose and fix production challenges
• Ensure documentation is accessible and up to date for artists and technical teams
• Help inspire and empower the art team to optimize their workflows and processes

Requirements

• Strong expertise in Unreal Engine Blueprints
• Strong expertise in Unreal Engine materials and shader development
• Advanced knowledge of material graphs, PBR workflows, and real-time rendering principles
• Experience developing tools within Unreal Engine
• Experience building configurators, automation tools, or similar systems
• Solid understanding of lighting, reflections, and surface response
• Excellent problem-solving skills
• Strong teamwork and communication abilities
• Ability to work effectively under deadlines
• Fluent in English (written and spoken); German is a plus
• Quick learner with a willingness to share knowledge
• Self-motivated with strong attention to detail
• Naturally curious and proactive mindset

Nice to Have

• Programming knowledge (C++ and/or Python)
• Experience with USD (Universal Scene Description)
• Understanding of automotive shading standards (e.g., car paint, clear coat, interiors)
• Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git)
• Experience working with premium brands or high-end productions
• Proficiency in additional 3D software (e.g., Maya, Blender)
