Job Overview

The British Council has been operating in India since 1948. Our vision is of a bilateral relationship strengthened by improved economic, social and cultural opportunities for the next generation of young people in India.

We work in arts, education and by sharing the English language and increasingly focus on transformative programmes online (with the aim of reaching tens of millions of people in 2017 and more in future years) and through partnerships in States across the country. In 2016-17 we engaged with almost 3.2m people through our operations and libraries in New Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata and Mumbai and through centres in Ahmedabad.

Role Purpose

  • To maintain and enhance professional development and academic quality in the teaching centre, through the management of in-house teacher development programmes and support.
  • To promote and ensure quality teaching and effective learning of English.
  • To provide learners with a rewarding and stimulating English language learning experience.
  • To support the wider aims of British Council and its cultural relations mission.


Accountabilities

  • Teaching Excellence: Plan and deliver up to 18 hours of high-quality English language teaching weekly, monitor student progress, provide feedback, enhance learner autonomy, and contribute to course development and promotional efforts.
  • Academic Management: Support senior teachers, Cluster/Regional/Global Teaching Excellence, and YL Product teams in implementing the Teaching Excellence Action Plan (TEAP), in implementing teaching excellence strategies, assist in managing teaching center operations, and enhance Young Learner programs through teacher support, resource management, and customer engagement.
  • Teacher Training: Identify training needs, plan and deliver internal teacher training, and facilitate external training programs like TYLEC and DELTA.
  • Safeguarding: Ensure awareness of safeguarding policies, provide advice, act as the first contact for concerns, and contribute to sector-wide safeguarding plans.
  • Collaboration and Relationship Building: Foster understanding of contemporary UK culture, build long-term relationships, and support marketing and customer service excellence within the teaching center.


Qualifications

Essentials

  • University degree (in any discipline).
  • TEFL-I qualification (CELTA or Trinity Certificate TESOL).
  • Recognised diploma in EFL (i.e. DELTA or Trinity Diploma TESOL).


Work Experience

Essentials

  • 2 years post-diploma i.e. DELTA or Trinity Diploma TESOL experience.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience of management and delivery of teacher training.
  • Experience of line managing/ coordinating teaching teams.
    • Adults General English 18+ (1200+ hours).
    • IELTS preparation (800+ hours).
    • Corporate delivery (600+ hours).

Salary & Benefits

  • Salary: Monthly pay scale between 1,11,667 INR - 2,06,917 INR (depending on qualification and work experience).
  • Annual Leave: Annual leave entitlement is 21 working days in a calendar year and 14 Public Holidays each calendar year.
  • Medical Allowances: Group Medical Insurance policy of INR 500,000 as a family floater amount.
  • Allowance for Overseas applicants (Recruiter from UK): Hotel stay, help with housing agents, airport pick-up, baggage allowance, etc.


Additional Information

  • Location: Delhi or Chennai.
  • Contract Duration: 24 Months.
  • Contract Hours: 35.7 hours/week.
  • Contract Teaching Hours: up to 18 hours/week.
  • Tentative start date: May 2025.
  • Work schedule: Teaching takes place all through the week, and teachers work 5 days, usually including Saturday or Sunday, and sometimes both. Weekends are normally consecutive days, but this is not guaranteed. Evening classes are common during the week, and early morning or evening classes are common on Saturdays and Sundays. Split shifts are unlikely, though occasionally unavoidable.
  • Local restrictions on employment: Applicants must have the right to work in India. The roles open for ONLY Indian nationality and UK nationality.
