Job description

Senior Manager – Global Tax (Tax Centre of Excellence)

Morningstar’s Global Tax team is part of the broader Finance organization and is responsible for worldwide tax accounting, compliance and reporting, planning, and tax processes. Morningstar is establishing a Tax Centre of Excellence ("Tax CoE") to support the global tax operation by driving consistency, quality, automation, and strong governance across jurisdictions, while partnering closely with regional finance teams, external advisors, and auditors.

The Role

The Senior Manager – Global Tax will be a key member of the Tax CoE, supporting global tax accounting, compliance and reporting, planning and process excellence initiatives. This role will play a critical part in the timely filing and review of income tax returns, preparing supporting calculations for quarterly and annual global income tax provision under US GAAP (ASC 740), and transformation of tax processes through standardization and automation. This role will work closely with the Global Tax leadership, regional accounting, finance and tax teams, as well as external advisors to ensure accurate, timely, and efficient planning and compliance for a US‑based multinational, publicly listed organization. This role will report directly to the Global Head of Tax based in Chicago and will require overlap with Europe and US Timezones.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support the preparation of the quarterly and annual global income tax provisions under US GAAP (ASC 740), including coordination with regional finance and tax teams.
  • Review income tax general ledger rollforwards for accuracy.
  • Review current and deferred tax calculations for non‑US entities, including permanent and temporary differences, valuation allowances, uncertain tax positions, and effective tax rate analysis.
  • Assist with certain US‑specific international tax calculations (e.g., GILTI, FDII, BEAT, FTC, Subpart F, APB 23, foreign currency translation impacts, etc.) in coordination with subject matter experts.
  • Review tax disclosures for non‑US statutory filings and internal management reporting.
  • Support tax accounting aspects of business combinations, reorganizations, and other significant transactions.
  • Participate in maintenance of transfer pricing program across international operations.
  • Build and maintain robust audit files and technical documentation to support tax positions, estimates, and judgments.
  • Partner with external auditors to ensure timely and smooth audit closure of tax accounting matters.
  • Assist in identifying, documenting, and evaluating uncertain tax positions in accordance with US GAAP (ASC 740) or local requirements.
  • Act as a key contributor to tax process standardization and automation initiatives within the Tax CoE.
  • Manage and optimize tax provision systems and technology tools (e.g., ONESOURCE or similar), including data integrity, templates, and reporting outputs.
  • Identify opportunities to improve data flow, controls, and efficiency between Finance, Accounting, and Tax systems in coordination with Information Technology.
  • Continuously assess emerging tax technology and best practices to enhance scalability and control.
  • Serve as a global tax partner to regional finance teams, providing guidance on tax accounting, reporting requirements, and year‑end close matters.
  • Collaborate with external advisors on tax accounting, compliance support, and technical matters.
  • Contribute to tax planning initiatives and special projects, including modeling and impact analyses.
  • Act as a senior individual contributor and mentor within the Tax CoE, providing technical guidance and reviewing work prepared by junior team members.
  • Support the development of tax knowledge and documentation to enable consistent global execution.
  • Drive a culture of quality, ownership, and continuous improvement within global tax operations.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Chartered Accountant (CA) with 8–12 years of progressive tax experience, including public accounting (Big4 preferred) and/or corporate tax in a US‑based multinational, publicly traded environment.
  • Strong hands‑on experience with US GAAP (ASC740) income tax accounting and global tax provision processes.
  • Understanding of US and international tax concepts and global tax reporting considerations.
  • Strong Excel skills and experience working with large data sets across multiple entities.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple deadlines in a complex, global environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain complex tax topics to non‑tax stakeholders.

Preferred Experience:

  • Supporting US multinationals (specifically with respect to income tax reporting under US GAAP) and statutory audits for non‑US companies.
  • Exposure to tax technology and provision software, automation tools, or finance transformation initiatives.
  • Experience with AI and other tools (e.g., Alteryx).
  • Prior experience working in a shared services or centre of excellence model.
  • Experience partnering across regions, time zones, and cultures.
Key Competencies
  • Strong technical tax accounting background with critical thinking skills and judgment.
  • Process orientated and continuous improvement mindset.
  • Effective stakeholder and auditor management.
  • Ability to balance detail with management perspective.
  • High ownership, resilience, and problem‑solving ability in fast‑paced environments.
Benefits

Morningstar’s hybrid work environment allows you to collaborate in‑person each week. In most locations, the hybrid model is four days in‑office each week. A range of other benefits are available to enhance flexibility as needs change.

Why This Role Matters
