Job summary

Equinix is seeking a Senior Staff Engineer to shape architecture and technical direction for scalable software platforms. This hands-on leadership role focuses on system design, distributed services, and cloud-native development with a backend Java emphasis.

You'll lead end-to-end technical solutions, drive API-first practices, and mentor teams while applying AI/GenAI to design, development, and operations to deliver reliable, scalable platform services.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of software engineering experience with ownership of complex problems.
• Strong expertise in system design, software architecture, distributed systems, and microservices.
• Hands-on experience building scalable APIs, platforms, and cloud-based SaaS/PaaS products.
• Strong fundamentals in software engineering with Java or similar backend language.
• Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases, cloud platforms, CI/CD, and production engineering.
• Hands-on AI/GenAI in software engineering for design, development, testing, or ops.
• Able to reason through complex problems and make pragmatic architectural trade-offs.

About the Role

We are looking for a Senior Staff Software Engineer to shape the architecture and technical direction of scalable software platforms at Equinix. This is a hands‑on technical leadership role for an engineer with strong expertise in system design, software architecture, distributed systems, microservices, and cloud‑native development. You will work closely with Product, Engineering, Architecture, and partner teams to solve complex problems and build reliable, scalable platform services. Our backend ecosystem is primarily Java‑based, but we are open to strong engineers from other technology backgrounds who bring the right depth in architecture and software engineering.

What You’ll Do

• Lead the architecture and system design of scalable, distributed platforms, microservices, APIs, and enterprise workflows.
• Own technical solutions end-to-end—from understanding complex problems and defining architecture to implementation and production.
• Design reusable platform frameworks and self‑service capabilities for service onboarding, configuration, and lifecycle management.
• Drive engineering excellence across scalability, reliability, security, observability, and performance.
• Champion API‑first development, CI/CD, DevSecOps, and cloud‑native engineering practices.
• Partner with Product, Architects, and Engineering teams to translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions.
• Apply AI/GenAI and AI‑assisted engineering across software design, development, testing, code reviews, troubleshooting, and operational insights.
• Explore emerging technologies through prototypes and PoCs and influence technology direction.
• Act as a technical multiplier, providing architectural guidance, mentoring engineers, and influencing technical decisions across teams.

What We’re Looking For

• 7+ years of software engineering experience, with demonstrated ownership of complex technical problems and influence on architecture or technical direction.
• Strong expertise in system design, software architecture, distributed systems, and microservices.
• Hands‑on experience building scalable APIs, platforms, and cloud‑based SaaS/PaaS products.
• Strong software engineering fundamentals and experience with Java or another modern backend programming language.
• Experience with SQL and/or NoSQL databases, cloud platforms, CI/CD, and production engineering.
• Hands‑on experience applying AI/GenAI in software engineering—for example, design, development, testing, code review, troubleshooting, or operational insights.
• Strong problem‑solving skills with the ability to work through complex and ambiguous problems and make pragmatic architectural trade‑offs.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence technical decisions across teams.
• Ability to learn and work across different technologies and toolsets.
