Job summary

Optum within UnitedHealth Group in Gurugram, India, seeks a seasoned software engineer to design, build, and scale enterprise-grade backend and frontend systems. You will work across the full SDLC, from design to production, delivering secure, high-performance solutions for health care domains.

The ideal candidate has 8+ years of experience, strong Java and Spring Boot skills, REST APIs, and hands-on cloud experience.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in computer science or related quantitative field.
• 8+ years of experience with software engineering and software development life cycle.
• 5+ years building Spring Boot-based APIs and backend services.
• Hands-on backend software engineering in large-scale enterprise environments.
• Experience in Agile software development environments.
• Experience with MS SQL and relational databases.
• Experience in regulated environments with focus on reliability, security, and compliance, especially healthcare/pharmacy.
• Knowledge of CI/CD practices and tooling, including GitHub Actions and secrets management.
• Strong Java proficiency and building secure, scalable applications.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and maintain full-stack applications using modern backend and frontend technologies.
• Build and evolve RESTful APIs and backend services with focus on security, scalability, and maintainability.
• Develop modern, responsive, and accessible user interfaces using contemporary frontend frameworks.
• Participate in the full software development lifecycle including design, testing, CI/CD, deployment, and production support.
• Act as a hands-on engineer, leading by example with high engineering standards.
• Troubleshoot complex issues, perform root-cause analysis, and implement durable solutions in dev and prod.
• Support availability, reliability, and stability for business-critical systems, including incident response.
• Collaborate with product, architecture, QA, and platform teams to translate requirements into technical solutions.
• Contribute to design docs, specs, and runbooks for long-term maintainability.
• Identify gaps and improvements within existing systems and propose scalable enhancements.
• Collaborate on opportunities for AI/ML integration.
• Adhere to SAFe practices and enterprise governance.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Design, develop, test, and maintain full-stack applications using modern backend and frontend technologies, delivering reliable, high-performance solutions at enterprise scale
• Build and evolve RESTful APIs and backend services with a focus on security, scalability, and maintainability
• Develop modern, responsive, and accessible user interfaces using contemporary frontend frameworks

• Act as a hands-on engineer, working independently on complex problems and leading by example through high engineering standards
• Troubleshoot complex technical issues, perform root-cause analysis, and implement durable solutions in both development and production environments
• Support application availability, reliability, and stability for business-critical systems, including participation in incident response and operational support
• Collaborate with product management, architecture, QA, and platform teams to translate business requirements and roadmaps into technical solutions
• Contribute to design documentation, technical specifications, and operational runbooks to support long-term maintainability
• Identify gaps, risks, and improvement opportunities within existing systems and propose practical, scalable enhancements
• Collaborate with the team to identify opportunities for AI/ML integration
• Adhere to Agile and Scaled Agile (SAFe) practices, engineering governance, and enterprise service management processes
• Comply with all applicable Company policies, procedures, and business directives, changes including those relating to work location, team assignments, work schedules, and flexible work arrangements

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor of Science in computer science or related quantitative field
• 8+ years of experience with software engineering and software development life cycle
• 5+ years of experience designing, developing, and supporting Spring Boot-based APIs and backend services
• Hands-on experience in backend software engineering within large-scale enterprise environments
• Experience working in Agile software development environments, collaborating closely with product, engineering, and operations teams
• Experience working with relational databases, including MS SQL
• Experience supporting systems in regulated environments with a solid focus on reliability, security, and compliance, particularly within healthcare or pharmacy domains
• Working knowledge of CI/CD practices and tooling, including GitHub Actions, artifact management, secrets management, and automated quality controls
• Solid proficiency in Java, with demonstrated experience building secure, scalable, and maintainable applications

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with React to build modern, responsive, and accessible user interfaces
• Experience with one of the cloud platforms (Azure, AWS or GCP). Having Azure cloud experience
• Experience with Optum enterprise platforms and tooling, including Skyline
• Experience with Camunda or similar workflow and business process orchestration frameworks
• Experience supporting high-availability, customer-facing platforms in healthcare, pharmacy benefit management, or related regulated industries
• Familiarity with operational excellence practices, including observability, incident management, and production support for mission-critical systems
