About the role

As a Senior Full Stack Software Engineer, you will provide technical leadership across multiple teams, shaping the engineering strategy for solving high-priority, business critical problems at scale. You will define the technical vision, address complex cross cutting challenges and maintain architectural coherence across the platform. You will raise engineering standards across the organisation, influence product and technology strategy, and enable teams to deliver secure, scalable and high-quality solutions efficiently. The role requires you to identify systemic opportunities, lead improvements to engineering practices and take accountability for technical outcomes that deliver measurable business value.

Who you will work with

This role sits within Finance Technology and works closely with data, AI and software engineers, product managers, architects, cyber, platform teams and business stakeholders. You will also partner with central Technology and Architecture teams to ensure solutions are reusable, interoperable and scalable, rather than developed in isolation.

Key responsibilities

• Technical vision and strategy: Define and drive the technical vision and architecture across multiple teams and domains, ensuring engineering priorities remain aligned with business objectives. Evaluate emerging technologies and make recommendations that shape the organisation’s long‑term technical direction.
• Backend and API development: Architect and guide the development of scalable backend services using C#, .NET Core and Python. Establish standards and patterns for performance, resilience, security and maintainability that can be adopted across teams.
• Frontend development: Set the direction for frontend architecture using React.js, Next.js and Node.js. Define scalable and maintainable patterns for component architecture, state management, performance and user experience.
• Cloud architecture: Shape cloud architecture across Azure and AWS, establishing consistent approaches to scalability, resilience, security and cost optimisation. Lead cloud migration and modernisation initiatives where required.
• CI/CD and platform excellence: Improve the organisation’s approach to software delivery, reliability and operational excellence. Drive enhancements to CI/CD, automated testing, observability, monitoring and incident management practices.
• Cross-team technical leadership: Lead complex technical initiatives spanning multiple teams and domains. Resolve ambiguity, facilitate architectural decisions and maintain consistency across the wider platform.
• Engineering culture and mentoring: Mentor senior engineers and technical leads, supporting their development into broader leadership roles. Foster a culture of engineering excellence, continuous learning, constructive challenge and knowledge sharing.
• Stakeholder and executive communication: Represent engineering in senior and executive forums. Translate complex technical decisions and trade‑offs into clear business terms, using evidence and insight to influence product roadmaps and investment priorities.
• Organisational improvement: Identify and lead improvements to engineering processes, tooling and ways of working that increase delivery velocity, quality and developer productivity.
• Ownership and accountability: Take end‑to‑end ownership of critical and ambiguous technical challenges, from problem definition and solution design through to production delivery, operational health and measurable business outcomes.

Qualifications And Experience

• Software engineering: More than 10 years of full-stack software engineering experience, with a proven record of delivering high-impact technical initiatives. Deep expertise in designing and building scalable backend services using .NET, including experience setting architectural direction across multiple teams.
• Frontend engineering: Expert knowledge of React.js, including advanced approaches to state management, performance optimisation, micro-frontends and component architecture at scale. Experience with Next.js and Node.js is highly desirable.
• Platform technologies: Expert knowledge of Docker, Kubernetes and the wider Kubernetes ecosystem, including the design and operation of secure, highly available, multi-tenant production environments.
• Security and authentication: Deep understanding of full-stack security, including authentication, authorisation, API security and threat modelling. Proven ability to embed security-by-design practices across engineering teams.
• Architecture and distributed systems: Extensive experience designing complex distributed systems using microservices, serverless and event‑driven architectures. Strong judgement in evaluating technical trade‑offs and guiding teams towards proportionate, sustainable solutions.
• Cloud engineering: Deep hands‑on experience with Azure or AWS services and cloud architecture, including the design of highly available, multi‑region and cost‑optimised platforms.
• DevOps and CI/CD: Extensive experience designing and evolving CI/CD strategies, build systems, automated testing and deployment practices at organisational scale. Operations and reliability: Strong experience in site reliability engineering principles, observability and incident management. Experience defining service‑level objectives and leading improvements in operational maturity.
• Developer experience: A strong record of improving developer experience, engineering productivity and tooling beyond the boundaries of a single team.
• Technical leadership: Demonstrated success in leading cross‑organisational technical initiatives, developing senior engineering talent and delivering measurable improvements in engineering quality, reliability and delivery performance.
• Collaboration and influence: Exceptional communication and influencing skills, with the ability to build alignment across engineering, product, architecture, business and executive stakeholders. Comfortable providing direction in complex and ambiguous environments.
• System design: Expert ability to design end‑to‑end systems that balance scalability, reliability, security, maintainability, cost and speed to market.
• Strategic thinking: Ability to connect technical decisions to business outcomes, anticipate future needs and build consensus around a sustainable long‑term technical direction.
