Job summary

New Relic is seeking a senior Java engineer to design, build, and operate cloud-native microservices for the NR Lens data platform. You will implement SQL gateways, data-source connectors, and secure, scalable JDBC integrations on AWS, with a focus on reliability and multi-tenant performance.

You will collaborate across teams to deliver canary deployments and robust observability, while contributing to deployment automation and security controls across a global environment.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional Java development.
• Strong experience building cloud-native applications on AWS.
• Experience designing and operating containerized microservices on Kubernetes.
• Experience building and operating distributed systems at scale.
• Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code (Terraform) and CI/CD pipelines.
• Experience with AWS security patterns.
• Experience with observability tooling — SLOs/SLIs, dashboards, alerting.
• Comfort debugging production issues across multi-service architectures.
• Experience with gRPC or Thrift-based service communication.
• Experience with GraphQL APIs.
• Nice-to-have: RBAC/authorization in multi-tenant SaaS environments.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain cloud-native Java microservices in the NR Lens path: SQL Gateway, Query Gateway, and data source connectors.
• Develop and harden JDBC connectors — including connection lifecycle, credential handling, and query pushdown optimization.
• Improve query reliability and performance across a multi-tenant distributed deployment serving 50+ customers.
• Build and operate services on AWS (EKS, IAM/STS, S3) with infrastructure-as-code practices.
• Implement security controls for user-supplied connection parameters and SSRF prevention.
• Build materialized view scheduling, execution, and lifecycle management features.
• Design and implement deployment automation — canary, progressive rollouts, observability integration.
• Collaborate with NRDB/Dirac team on internal connector bridging federated queries to the telemetry engine.
• Participate in on-call rotation and incident response for production systems.

The NR Lens team builds New Relic's Federated Data Platform — a distributed SQL query engine that lets customers connect external data sources (Snowflake, PostgreSQL, Google Sheets, AWS CloudWatch) and query them directly from New Relic.

You’ll work on the distributed query execution layer, connector architecture, and API gateway that powers cross-source JOINs and unified analytics across customer data stores.

WhatYou'llDo

• Design, build, and maintain cloud-native Java microservices in the NR Lens query path: SQL Gateway, Query Gateway, and data source connector plugins

• Develop and harden JDBC connector integrations — including connection lifecycle management, credential handling, query pushdown optimization, and security validation

• Improve query reliability and performance across a multi-tenant distributed SQL deployment serving 50+ customers

• Build and operate services on AWS (EKS, IAM/STS, S3) with infrastructure-as-code practices

• Implement security controls for user-supplied connection parameters (JDBC URL validation, SSRF prevention, hostname allowlisting)

• Build materialized view scheduling, execution, and lifecycle management features

• Knowledge of RBAC/authorization systems in multi-tenant SaaS environments
