Job summary

Mimecast is seeking a Senior Software Engineer (backend) to build robust, scalable Java-based APIs and cloud-native services on AWS. You will design distributed systems for high throughput and resilience within the Governance, Compliance & Insights team.

This role requires 9+ years of backend experience, strong Java, AWS, REST, SQL, and observability. Mimecast offers competitive compensation, learning opportunities, and a hybrid work model with 2 days in the office.

Qualifications

• Nine+ years of backend engineering experience.
• Proficiency with Java (21+), modern frameworks, data structures, algorithms, and system design.
• Extensive AWS experience including EKS/ECS/Lambda/EC2/S3/DynamoDB/SQS-SNS/API Gateway.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain robust, high-performance Java-based APIs.
• Design and implement cloud-native backend services on AWS (serverless and containerized).
• Architect and evolve distributed, event-driven systems for high throughput, resilience, and scalability.
• Lead design discussions, code reviews, and production troubleshooting.
• Define and improve CI/CD, observability, and deployment strategies.

What You’ll Do

As a Senior Software Engineer (with backend specialization), you will play a pivotal role within the GCI team.

In This Role, You Will

• Develop and maintain robust, high-performance Java-based APIs
• Design and implement cloud-native backend services on AWS across serverless (Lambda, API Gateway) and containerized (ECS/EKS) platforms
• Architect and evolve distributed, event-driven systems for high-throughput processing, resilience, and scalability
• Lead technical design discussions, code reviews, and production troubleshooting to uphold engineering excellence
• Define and improve CI/CD pipelines, observability, and deployment strategies for reliable cloud delivery

What You’ll Bring

• Have 9+ years of hands‑on experience in backend engineering.
• Expert-level proficiency with Java (21+), modern Java frameworks and libraries, and deep understanding of data structures, algorithms, and system design.
• Strong experience with AWS services such as EKS, ECS, Lambda, EC2, S3, DynamoDB, SQS/SNS, and API Gateway.
• Proven experience designing, building, and operating distributed systems and RESTful APIs at scale.
• Experience working with relational databases (SQL) and understanding how to optimise queries for performance.
• Working experience with Git and familiarity with Jenkins pipelines.
• Working experience with observability tools like Grafana, Prometheus, ELK, or OpenTelemetry.
• A proactive approach to problem‑solving and a drive to understand the “under the hood” mechanics of complex backend systems.
• Demonstrated proficiency with AI‑assisted development tools (e.g., Cursor) to enhance productivity and streamline workflows.
