Job summary

Exotel, a leading customer communication platform in Bengaluru, seeks an experienced backend engineer to own and advance the VoIP and telephony stack. You will craft scalable microservices, mentor peers, and operate critical infrastructure in a fast-paced, on-call environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelors or Masters in Computer Science or Communications Engineering.
• Experience leading project teams to deliver critical software solutions.
• 5+ years experience in design and development of REST-based microservices.
• 4+ years with Golang, Ruby, or C/C++ and scripting in shell or Python.
• Experience with MySQL or PostgreSQL and data stores; cloud familiarity (AWS preferred).
• Proficiency with DevOps tools: Ansible, Jenkins, Terraform, Kubernetes, Git.
• Strong knowledge of data structures, multi-threading and concurrency; Linux proficiency.
• Experience in Agile SDLC and excellent communication; team player mindset.

Responsibilities

• Lead projects related to Exotel's telephony and VoIP stack throughout lifecycle.
• Collaborate with engineers to design, develop, test, deploy, and operate features.
• Build fault-tolerant, scalable, real-time distributed VoIP systems.
• Work in an Agile team; drive automation and scripting initiatives.
• Provide timely analysis and debugging of operational issues; participate in on-call rota.
• Mentor junior engineers and promote ownership and best practices.

Exotel engineering solves some really cool infrastructure level problems with the goal of ensuring no one misses a call or an SMS.

• Our focus is on building a very fault-tolerant, loosely coupled, scalable and real-time distributed system
• We are generally agnostic of language, technology or tools. Currently, our tech stack is built on Golang, Node.js, Ruby, Java and PHP. We use Aerospike, MySQL as data stores, ElasticSearch for search and Beanstalkd for queuing
• We emphasize a lot on clean abstractions of code, loosely coupled services and good coding practices

What you will do?

• Lead projects related to Exotel's telephony and VoIP stack. Responsible for driving projects throughout its lifecycle.
• Work with a team of engineers to explore, design, develop, test, deploy, and operationalize a product's features & improvements.
• Build fault-tolerant, scalable and real-time distributed voip system
• Effectively work in a collaborative and agile team environment
• Support team with timely analysis and debugging of operational issues.
• Be on rotational on-call roster to handle operational issues
• Emphasis on automation and scripting.
• Mentor junior engineers in the team.

What we look for?

Must Haves

• Bachelors or Masters degree in Computer Science or Communications Engineering
• Experience leading project team to deliver critical software solutions
• 3+ years experience in working with a major cloud platform like AWS (preferred), GCP, Azure.
• 5+ years experience in design and development of REST-based microservices.
• 4+ Experience in programming with one of Golang (preferred), Ruby, C/C++
• Experience in scripting with shell, python
• Experience with datastores such as MySQL, Postgres
• Experience with DevOps tools like Ansible, Jenkins, Terraform, kubernetes, Git
• Good understanding of data structures, multi-threading and concurrency concepts.
• Proficiency in working in Linux environment
• Experience working in Agile SDLC process
• Strong analytical, problem solving and troubleshooting skills
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Team-player, flexible and able to work in a fast-paced environment
• A "devops" mindset. You own what you will develop.

Good to Haves

• Experience with custom development on Asterisk/Freeswitch/Kamailio/Opensips is a plus
• Experience with SIP or any other SIP testing tools
• Experience with ISDN, WebRTC technologies
• Experience with elasticsearch queries and visualization tools like grafana, kibana
• Experience with monitoring frameworks like Nagios, Prometheus
• Experience with developing Android, iOS based voip clients
• Knowledge on VoIP domain technologies including SIP, SDP, RTP, RTCP.
