The role requires leading R&D projects from concept to delivery, working with internal and external partners, and translating research into scalable solutions for hydrogen storage, transport, and infrastructure. Ideal candidates hold a PhD in Metallurgy or Materials Science with 5+ years of post-PhD experience in related R&D.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Metallurgy or Materials Science (mandatory).
• Minimum 5 years of post-Ph.D. industrial R&D experience in metallurgy, materials science, or coatings technology.
• Demonstrated experience in alloy development for hydrogen applications, including embrittlement assessment and permeation studies.
• Strong background in physical metallurgy, phase transformations, microstructure evolution, and structure–property relations.

Designation: Senior Research Scientist-Hydrogen Technology Experience: 5+yrs Location: Bangalore

Roles & & Responsibilities:

• Consult with internal stakeholders (OPCO & DIIC) to define the scope of research projects
• Collaborate with external partners, SMEs, OPCO stakeholders, and internal engineering teams to identify viable and high-potential solutions
• Identify the infrastructure required for each project and ensure its availability—internally or externally—based on economic viability and usability
• Lead and manage R&D projects from concept through to deliverables; define milestones, allocate resources, and ensure timely delivery within scope and budget
• Identify emerging trends in materials science and hydrogen technologies; propose novel research directions and contribute to the organisation's IP portfolio

Hands-on experience in the following areas is essential:

• Alloy Development for Hydrogen Applications: Design, develop, and evaluate metallic alloys for hydrogen storage, transport, and infrastructure; assess hydrogen compatibility, embrittlement resistance, and long-term performance
• Coatings Development & Optimisation: Develop and optimise protective and functional coatings using PVD, thermal spray, and electroless plating; tailor coating architectures for hydrogen barrier performance, corrosion resistance, and mechanical durability
• Materials & Coatings Characterisation: Plan and execute comprehensive characterisation—Optical Microscopy, XRD, FTIR, SEM-EDS, TGA, DSC—and testing including mechanical evaluation, hydrogen embrittlement, permeation studies, hardness, toughness, bond/adhesion strength, and wear resistance
• Data Interpretation & Reporting: Critically analyse and interpret complex test results; prepare clear, concise technical reports and presentations for internal and external stakeholders

Must have skills:

• Ph.D. in Metallurgy, Materials Science, or a closely related discipline (mandatory)
• Minimum 5 years of post-Ph.D. industrial R&D experience in metallurgy, materials science, or coatings technology
• Demonstrated experience in alloy development and testing for hydrogen applications, including hydrogen embrittlement assessment, permeation studies, and compatibility evaluation
• Strong background in physical metallurgy, including phase transformations, microstructural evolution, coatings development and evaluation, and structure–property correlation

Applied Research & Project Execution Skills:

• Proven track record of executing applied research projects with hands‑on experience in research methodologies
• Proficient in the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) process and set‑based concurrent engineering with trade‑off analysis
• Ability to conduct thorough literature surveys, synthesise findings, and derive actionable inferences to advance project objectives
• Skilled at identifying risks early and developing effective mitigation plans
