Job Description: Senior Manager – EngineeringPosition Overview
The Senior Manager – Engineering is responsible for providing strategic technical leadership, managing high-performing engineering teams, and delivering scalable, reliable, and secure technology solutions aligned with business objectives. This role combines people leadership, technical direction, delivery ownership, and cross-functional collaboration to ensure the successful execution of engineering initiatives from planning through production.
The position requires an experienced engineering leader who can establish strong development practices, mentor managers and engineers, improve operational excellence, and partner effectively with product, design, security, infrastructure, and business stakeholders.
Engineering Leadership and Strategy
- Define and execute the engineering strategy in alignment with organizational goals, product priorities, and long-term technology objectives.
- Lead the planning, prioritization, and delivery of multiple engineering initiatives across one or more teams.
- Translate business requirements into practical, scalable, and maintainable technology solutions.
- Establish engineering standards, development processes, architectural guidelines, and quality expectations.
- Promote a culture of innovation, accountability, collaboration, continuous improvement, and customer focus.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend solutions that improve product capabilities, engineering efficiency, scalability, and reliability.
Team and People Management
- Manage, develop, and motivate engineering managers, technical leads, and software engineers.
- Build high-performing, diverse, and inclusive teams through effective hiring, onboarding, coaching, and succession planning.
- Set clear performance expectations and conduct regular feedback, career development, and performance discussions.
- Identify skill gaps and create opportunities for training, mentoring, knowledge sharing, and professional growth.
- Support organizational planning, workforce allocation, and resource prioritization across engineering functions.
- Encourage effective communication and collaboration across geographically distributed or cross-functional teams.
Technical Direction and Architecture
- Provide technical guidance on system architecture, application design, integrations, APIs, data platforms, and engineering practices.
- Review and approve significant technical designs, implementation approaches, and architectural decisions.
- Ensure solutions are designed for scalability, availability, maintainability, performance, and security.
- Promote modern software development practices, including automated testing, code reviews, continuous integration, continuous delivery, and observability.
- Identify and manage technical debt while balancing short-term delivery needs with long-term platform sustainability.
- Partner with architecture, security, infrastructure, and operations teams to establish resilient technology solutions.
Delivery and Execution
- Own engineering delivery commitments, timelines, dependencies, risks, and quality outcomes.
- Establish appropriate planning, estimation, tracking, and reporting mechanisms for engineering programs.
- Remove execution barriers and ensure teams have the resources, clarity, and support required to deliver effectively.
- Monitor project progress and communicate status, risks, trade-offs, and mitigation plans to senior stakeholders.
- Drive continuous improvement in development velocity, release quality, operational stability, and engineering productivity.
- Ensure releases meet agreed business, technical, security, compliance, and customer requirements.
Reliability, Security, and Operational Excellence
- Establish practices that improve system availability, performance, scalability, incident response, and recovery capabilities.
- Promote proactive monitoring, logging, alerting, capacity planning, and service-level management.
- Ensure engineering teams follow security, privacy, compliance, and risk-management standards.
- Participate in the management and resolution of critical production incidents and conduct effective root-cause analysis.
- Drive preventive actions and ensure lessons learned are incorporated into engineering processes and system designs.
Stakeholder and Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with Product Management to define roadmaps, prioritize features, and align technical execution with customer and business value.
- Collaborate with Design, Quality Assurance, DevOps, Security, Data, Customer Support, and other business functions.
- Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Build trusted relationships with senior leadership and provide informed recommendations on engineering investments and priorities.
- Represent the engineering organization in strategic planning, operational reviews, and business discussions.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related discipline; equivalent professional experience may be considered.
- Significant experience in software engineering, systems development, or technology delivery, including experience managing engineering teams.
- Demonstrated experience leading multiple engineering teams, managers, or complex technical programs.
- Strong understanding of software development life cycles, system design, architecture, testing, deployment, and production operations.
- Experience delivering scalable, reliable, and secure software products or platforms.
- Proven ability to manage priorities, dependencies, risks, budgets, and delivery commitments.
- Strong knowledge of Agile, Scrum, Kanban, or other modern software delivery methodologies.
- Excellent communication, stakeholder management, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in a cloud-based, product-led, or technology-driven organization.
- Familiarity with cloud platforms, distributed systems, microservices, APIs, databases, DevOps, observability, and infrastructure automation.
- Experience managing engineering organizations through growth, transformation, or process improvement initiatives.
- Knowledge of secure software development, regulatory requirements, privacy practices, and technology risk management.
- Experience working with globally distributed teams and cross-cultural stakeholders.
- Professional certifications in cloud computing, Agile delivery, engineering management, or related areas.
