Senior Full Stack Engineer
About TANUH

TANUH (Translational AI for Networked Universal Healthcare) is an IISc-anchored Section 8 Company on a mission to ensure that frontline healthcare delivery workers have access to AI and digital technologies that work to support them and combat NCDs. We are funded by the Ministry of Education and google.org and function as an AI Centre of Excellence.

Role Overview

As a Full Stack Engineer, you will own end‑to‑end product features across modern web applications, Python-based AI backend and NodeJS based backend service. You will build clinical workflows and AI model outputs into reliable, secure, and intuitive web experiences for clinicians, program officers, and administrators - and into clean, well‑documented APIs consumed by our Android app and partner systems.

This is a hands‑on engineering role for someone who is comfortable shipping production‑grade React / TypeScript front‑ends, building scalable APIs and data pipelines on cloud, and collaborating with data scientists to deploy ML models responsibly under India's evolving healthcare and data protection regulations. You will partner closely with Mobile Application developers to define and deliver API contracts and data flows.

Key Responsibilities
Web Frontend Development
  • Design, develop, and maintain responsive, accessible web applications using React (with Next.js) and TypeScript for clinicians, partners, and internal operations team.
  • Implement reusable component libraries and design systems (Tailwind / shadcn / MUI) that conform to WCAG 2.1 AA and Government of India accessibility guidelines (GIGW).
  • Optimise for performance and reliability on flaky networks - code‑splitting, caching, progressive loading, and graceful degradation.
  • Ship a multilingual web experience (i18n) supporting English, and regional languages with proper Indic script and number‑format handling.
  • Implement secure authentication and identity flows including ABHA‑based login, OTP, SSO, MFA, role‑based access for various roles, and session/audit controls.
AI‑Powered Backend & APIs
  • Design, build, and operate scalable backend services in Python (FastAPI / Django REST Framework) /TypeScript (NodeJS) that serve web dashboards, the companion Android app, and partner integrations.
  • Productionise AI/ML models developed by the data science team - building inference services, feature pipelines, model versioning, and monitoring for drift, bias, and clinical performance across diverse Indian sub‑populations.
  • Architect data pipelines (batch and streaming) for ingesting forms, screening results, lab values, prescriptions, and longitudinal patient records, with appropriate de‑identification and consent management.
  • Build necessary compliant integrations and integrate with national and state systems where required.
  • Define and version clear, well‑documented REST/GraphQL contracts used by both the web app and the Android client; collaborate with the mobile team on offline‑sync, conflict resolution, and pagination semantics.
System Design & DevOps
  • Own architecture decisions across services: API design, data modelling, caching, message queues, and event‑driven workflows.
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure‑as‑code (Terraform / Pulumi), container orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes), and observability (logs, metrics, traces).
  • Implement data residency, encryption‑at‑rest and in‑transit, audit logging, vulnerability management, and CERT‑In incident reporting practices.
  • Drive engineering practices around code quality, testing (unit, integration, end‑to‑end with Playwright / Cypress), threat modelling, and incident response.
Cross‑Functional Collaboration
  • Partner closely with Product Managers, public health experts, data scientists, designers, the Android team, and program teams to translate requirements and field realities into well‑engineered software.
  • Contribute to product discovery: prototype rapidly, run usability testing with clinicians and program officers, and iterate based on field feedback from PHCs, HWCs, district offices, and state programs.
  • Mentor junior engineers, conduct code reviews, and help shape engineering culture in a small, mission‑driven team.
Requirements
Required Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, IT, or a related engineering discipline from a recognised university (B.E./B.Tech/M.Tech/MCA or equivalent). Strong demonstrable experience may substitute for formal qualifications.
  • Experience: 6-10 years of professional software engineering experience.
  • Frontend: Strong proficiency in modern JavaScript / TypeScript and React, with hands‑on experience in Next.js (or a comparable framework), state management (Redux / Zustand / TanStack Query), and component libraries. Solid understanding of HTML, CSS / Tailwind, and accessibility.
  • Backend: Strong Python skills, with hands‑on experience building production APIs using FastAPI, Django, or Flask. Solid understanding of REST design, authentication (OAuth2 / JWT), and asynchronous programming.
  • Databases: Proficiency with relational databases (PostgreSQL / MySQL) and at least one NoSQL or time‑series store (MongoDB, Redis, Elasticsearch, InfluxDB).
  • Cloud & DevOps: Working knowledge of at least one major cloud provider (AWS, GCP, or Azure) - preferably with experience deploying in Indian cloud regions - along with Docker and CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, or similar).
  • Engineering Fundamentals: Strong grasp of data structures, algorithms, system design, version control (Git), and modern software engineering practices including testing and code review.
  • Ownership: Demonstrated ability to take a feature from ambiguous problem statement to production, including measuring impact post‑launch.
Preferred Qualifications.
  • Experience deploying ML models in production - familiarity with PyTorch, TensorFlow, scikit‑learn, ONNX, MLflow, or similar tooling.
  • Experience building data visualisations and dashboards.
  • Open‑source contributions, technical writing, or community engagement in the Indian healthtech / public health / AI ecosystem.
