WSP India is seeking a Senior Engineer – Mining/Rock Mechanics to join the UK GCC Mining team, operating from Bengaluru or Delhi offices. The ideal candidate will have a Civil/Geotechnical background with a postgraduate in Geotechnical Engineering or Rock Mechanics.

Work involves open pit and underground mining projects across regions, with exposure to global specialists and innovative ground engineering practices.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering or related field.
• Postgraduate qualification in rock mechanics/geotechnical engineering strongly preferred.
• Minimum 8 years of professional geotechnical/rock mechanics experience.
• Understanding of ground characterisation and geotechnical design processes.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to geotechnical and rock mechanics services for open pit and underground mining projects.
• Perform rock mass characterisation from borehole, lab and field data.
• Apply rock mass classification systems (Q, RMR, GSI) and interpret results.
• Develop 3D geological/structural ground models using Leapfrog Geo.
• Design and evaluate excavation stability for stopes, shafts, drifts, and slopes.
• Carry out rock mass stability assessments using empirical, analytical and numerical methods.
• Conduct numerical modelling with Itasca, Rocscience and related tools.
• Participate in fieldwork and ground investigations.

As a Senior Engineer – Mining/Rock Mechanics, you will be part of the UK GCC Mining team in WSP India and operate out of our Bengaluru/Delhi office. The ideal candidate for this critical role would be from a Civil Engineering/Geology background with a postgraduation in Geotechnical Engineering/Rock Mechanics. Studies relating to the reduction in embodied carbon in design would be highly regarded. The role will support a diverse portfolio of open pit and underground mining projects, while also contributing to major infrastructure and geoenergy developments in the UK and internationally. This is an excellent opportunity to work alongside leading specialists within WSP’s global mining and ground engineering network, delivering technically challenging and high‑impact projects across multiple sectors.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to the delivery of geotechnical and rock mechanics services for open pit and underground mining projects.
• Undertake rock mass characterisation, including interpretation of borehole, laboratory, and field data to derive material and discontinuity properties for design.
• Apply rock mass classification systems (Q, RMR, GSI), including statistical analysis and interpretation.
• Develop engineering ground models, including 3D geological and structural models using software such as Leapfrog Geo.
• Design and evaluate excavation stability, including stopes, shafts, drifts, and slopes
• Perform rock mass stability assessments for slopes and underground excavations using empirical, analytical, and numerical approaches.
• Carry out numerical modelling and analysis using industry‑standard tools (Itasca software - FLAC2D/3D, UDEC, 3DEC, PLAXIS 2D/3D, Rocscience suite, etc)
• Participate in fieldwork, including geotechnical core logging, site inspections, and rock face mapping during ground investigations.
• Collaborate with WSP’s global mining and ground engineering teams, working closely with specialists across regions and disciplines.
• Contribute to technical innovation, continuous improvement, and industry-leading standards

• You will be joining a GCC UK Mining Team, working alongside a multidisciplinary group of experts, with a strong link with our global mining and ground engineering business in delivering work to our clients within all WSP regions.
• You will collaborate with talented and diverse professionals for delivering a range of projects across the mining industry (open pit and underground mines), through to infrastructure (tunnel and cavern engineering, shaft sinking), and the energy sector (underground gas storage, salt caverns, hydropower, geothermal).

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Engineering Geology, Civil Engineering, or a related discipline.
• A postgraduate qualification in rock mechanics or geotechnical engineering is strongly preferred.
• Relevant post‑degree professional experience of minimum of 8 Years in geotechnical and/or rock mechanics engineering.
• Understanding of ground characterisation and geotechnical design processes.
• Experience with numerical modelling software, particularly Itasca (FLAC2D/3D, Plaxis 2D/3D, UDEC, 3DEC) and the Rocscience suite.
• Willingness and enthusiasm to develop technical capability and apply advanced methods to solve rock engineering problems.
• Professional membership (or working towards) with a relevant institution.
• Experience with Python programming and CAD / parametric modelling (e.g. Rhino / Grasshopper) would be an advantage.
• Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and communication skills (written and verbal)
