Job summary

WSP India is seeking a Senior Engineer – Mining/Rock Mechanics to join the GCC UK Mining team from Bengaluru or Delhi offices. The role involves geotechnical/rock mechanics for open pit and underground mining projects, including rock mass characterization, data interpretation, and 3D geological modelling with Leapfrog Geo.

You will apply Q/RMR/GSI classifications, perform stability analyses, and use Itasca, RocScience, and PLAXIS tools. Collaboration across regions and innovation are key.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Engineering Geology, Civil Engineering or related discipline.
  • Postgraduate qualification in rock mechanics or geotechnical engineering preferred.
  • 12+ years of post-degree professional experience in geotechnical/rock mechanics.
  • Experience with ground characterisation and geotechnical design processes.
  • Familiarity with Itasca, RocScience and numerical modelling tools.
  • Willingness to develop technical capability and apply advanced methods.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver geotechnical and rock mechanics services for mining projects (open pit/underground).
  • Characterise rock mass using borehole, lab, and field data for design.
  • Apply rock mass classification systems (Q, RMR, GSI) and analyse results.
  • Develop 3D geological and structural models (e.g., Leapfrog Geo).
  • Design and evaluate excavation stability for stopes, shafts, drifts, slopes.
  • Perform rock mass stability assessments using empirical/analytical methods.
  • Conduct numerical modelling using industry tools (Itasca, RocScience, PLAXIS).
  • Participate in fieldwork: core logging, site inspections, rock face mapping.
  • Collaborate with global teams and contribute to innovation and standards.

Job description

Senior Engineer – Mining/Rock Mechanics

you will be part of the UK GCC Mining team in WSP India and operate out of our Bengaluru/Delhi office.

The ideal candidate for this critical role would be from a Civil Engineering/Geology background with a postgraduation in Geotechnical Engineering/Rock Mechanics. Studies relating to the reduction in embodied carbon in design would be highly regarded.

The role will support a diverse portfolio of open pit and underground mining projects, while also contributing to major infrastructure and geoenergy developments in the UK and internationally.

This is an excellent opportunity to work alongside leading specialists within WSP’s global mining and ground engineering network, delivering technically challenging and high‑impact projects across multiple sectors.

Responsibilities
  • Contribute to the delivery of geotechnical and rock mechanics services for open pit and underground mining projects.
  • Undertake rock mass characterisation, including interpretation of borehole, laboratory, and field data to derive material and discontinuity properties for design.
  • Apply rock mass classification systems (Q, RMR, GSI), including statistical analysis and interpretation.
  • Develop engineering ground models, including 3D geological and structural models using software such as Leapfrog Geo.
  • Design and evaluate excavation stability, including stopes, shafts, drifts, and slopes
  • Perform rock mass stability assessments for slopes and underground excavations using empirical, analytical, and numerical approaches.
  • Carry out numerical modelling and analysis using industry‑standard tools (Itasca software - FLAC2D/3D, UDEC, 3DEC, PLAXIS 2D/3D, Rocscience suite, etc)
  • Participate in fieldwork, including geotechnical core logging, site inspections, and rock face mapping during ground investigations.
  • Collaborate with WSP’s global mining and ground engineering teams, working closely with specialists across regions and disciplines.
  • Contribute to technical innovation, continuous improvement, and industry-leading standards
Key Competencies
  • You will be joining a GCC UK Mining Team, working alongside a multidisciplinary group of experts, with a strong link with our global mining and ground engineering business in delivering work to our clients within all WSP regions.
  • You will collaborate with talented and diverse professionals for delivering a range of projects across the mining industry (open pit and underground mines), through to infrastructure (tunnel and cavern engineering, shaft sinking), and the energy sector (underground gas storage, salt caverns, hydropower, geothermal).
  • Our Mining team helps clients optimise performance, boost profitability, and operate responsibly. We have a comprehensive understanding of the mining industry and current issues including decarbonisation and understand future ready strategies are critical to countering these issues, capitalising on opportunities, and adding value to businesses.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Engineering Geology, Civil Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • A postgraduate qualification in rock mechanics or geotechnical engineering is strongly preferred.
  • Relevant post‑degree professional experience of minimum of 12 Years in geotechnical and/or rock mechanics engineering.
  • Understanding of ground characterisation and geotechnical design processes.
  • Experience with numerical modelling software, particularly Itasca (FLAC2D/3D, Plaxis 2D/3D, UDEC, 3DEC) and the Rocscience suite.
  • Willingness and enthusiasm to develop technical capability and apply advanced methods to solve rock engineering problems.
  • Professional membership (or working towards) with a relevant institution.
  • Experience with Python programming and CAD / parametric modelling (e.g. Rhino / Grasshopper) would be an advantage.
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and communication skills (written and verbal)
