Job summary

JoVE is seeking an experienced Software Engineer 3 to lead development of fast, well-tested code for web applications and modernization of the stack. You will build reusable components, work with product partners, and mentor teams across the engineering organization.

The role emphasizes data-driven backend systems, RESTful APIs, microservices, and cloud-native AWS architecture, with full remote work options and a competitive compensation package.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of experience building scalable, data-driven backend systems and APIs.
• At least 2 years in a technical leadership role, mentoring engineering teams.
• Strong proficiency in server-side Node.js; familiarity with React, JavaScript/TypeScript, CSS.
• Solid understanding of system design, data architecture, and microservices or modular monoliths.
• Experience with RESTful APIs and integrating with third-party services and external SDKs.
• Experience with event-driven systems, asynchronous processing, and message queues (Kafka, SNS/SQS, RabbitMQ, etc.).
• Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases (PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis); ability to optimize queries.
• Cloud-native architecture using AWS (serverless, ECS/Fargate, Lambda, S3, CloudFormation) or equivalents.
• Understanding of SOLID and DRY; SaaS, multi-tenancy; Agile Scrum with tools like JIRA.
• Experience with CI/CD and pipeline automation; incident triage.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with Designers, Product Managers, and Software Engineers to build and maintain UX, accessibility, and feasibility of the website and applications.
• Design and implement innovative solutions for data and content presentation across web and mobile platforms.
• Adhere to JoVE's brand standards across digital spaces and third-party platforms.
• Stay updated on latest web standards and development trends.
• Contribute to engineering excellence with automated unit testing.
• Explain and whiteboard complex technical issues to audiences with varying levels of expertise.
• Debug software components and identify code defects for remediation.

The Role

We are looking for an experienced Software Engineer 3 to help lead the development of fast, well-tested, and performant code for our web applications and modernizing our application stack. Responsibilities

• Collaborate with Designers, Product Managers, and Software Engineers to build and maintain the user experience, accessibility, and development feasibility of the website, applications, and supporting digital spaces.
• Design and implement innovative solutions for the presentation of data and content on our websites, mobile apps, and other platforms.
• Adhere to JoVE's brand standards and convey it cohesively across the website, supporting digital spaces and third-party platforms.
• Stay updated on the latest standards, changes, and web design and development trends.
• Contribute towards engineering excellence in areas like automated unit testing.

Requirements

• Strong proficiency in server-side programming (Node.js) - Must have Familiarity with frontend technologies - React, JavaScript/TypeScript, CSS Strong understanding of system design, data architecture, and microservices or modular monoliths.
• Skilled in designing and implementing RESTful APIs and integrating with third-party services and external SDKs.
• Experience with event-driven systems, asynchronous processing, and message queues (Kafka, SNS/SQS, RabbitMQ, etc.).
• Experienced with SQL and NoSQL databases - e.g., PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis,- with the ability to optimize queries and model complex data relationships.
• Solid experience with cloud-native architecture using AWS (serverless, ECS/Fargate, Lambda, S3, CloudFormation, etc.) or equivalent platforms.
• Demonstrated understanding and implementation of software design principles such as SOLID and DRY with Software as a Service (SaaS), multi-tenancy application development Embraces the concepts of Agile Scrum software development and its related collaboration and issue-tracking tools (e.g., JIRA, Rally).
• Experience working in a Continuous Integration / Continuous Delivery (CICD) model, including GitHub and CI pipeline automation tools Ability to triage and resolve incidents and lead incident investigations.
