Job summary

Jobtailor is seeking an experienced software engineer to design and support embedded Linux applications and desktop software for industrial monitoring and diagnostics. You will collaborate across Systems, Hardware, Test, Firmware and Product teams to deliver robust, real-time solutions.

Candidates should have 5+ years in embedded/Linux software, strong C++ and OO design expertise, and experience with Qt, C#, and modern development practices.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, or related discipline.
• Five+ years of industry experience developing embedded software, Linux-based apps, desktop apps, or software-based industrial products.
• Strong proficiency in C++ and modern software development practices.
• Experience developing apps/services/system-level software on Linux platforms.
• Experience developing desktop apps using C#, .NET, Qt, Java, or similar tech.
• Strong understanding of software architecture, OO design, design patterns, modular design, and lifecycle management.
• Extensive hands-on experience with multithreaded software in Linux, including scheduling and IPC.
• Experience with networking, distributed systems, and real-time environments.
• Experience with data acquisition, communications, diagnostics, configuration, or monitoring apps.
• Experience with IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus, IEC 60870, MQTT, OPC-UA, or similar.
• Experience debugging, troubleshooting, performance analysis, and root-cause investigation.
• Experience with Git and modern development workflows.
• Experience with automated testing, unit/integration testing, and software quality practices.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently within a cross-functional team.

Responsibilities

• You will be working on sophisticated, industrial, real-time systems involving embedded Linux platforms, industrial communications, edge computing, data acquisition, and desktop software applications.
• You will play a key role in the design, development, and support of software for mission-critical monitoring and diagnostic products used throughout the electrical power industry.
• Working closely with Systems, Hardware, Test, Firmware, and Product Management teams, you will develop software spanning embedded Linux platforms, edge applications, industrial communications, desktop software, engineering tools, and system integration layers.
• You will contribute across the complete product lifecycle, from requirements definition and architecture through implementation, integration, verification, release, and sustaining engineering.
• Develop high-quality software solutions using C++, C#, Python, or other appropriate programming languages.
• Develop Linux-based applications, services, data processing components, communications software, and system management functions.
• Implement and maintain industrial communications protocols including IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus, IEC 60870, MQTT, OPC-UA, and related technologies.
• Support integration across embedded devices, networking infrastructure, databases, cloud services, desktop applications, and wider product ecosystems.
• Perform root-cause analysis, debugging, and performance optimisation across complex software systems.
• Develop and support automated testing, regression testing, continuous integration, and software quality verification.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, or a related discipline.

• Extensive hands‑on experience developing, debugging, and optimising multithreaded software applications in Linux environments, including thread scheduling, synchronisation mechanisms, inter-process communication, resource management, and performance analysis.
• Experience with networking, distributed systems, and real-time or near-real-time software environments.
• Experience developing software for data acquisition, communications, diagnostics, configuration, or monitoring applications.
• Experience developing or supporting industrial communication protocols such as IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus, IEC 60870, MQTT, OPC-UA, or similar.
• Experience with software debugging, system troubleshooting, performance analysis, and root-cause investigation.
• Experience using version control systems such as Git and modern software development workflows.
• Experience with automated testing, unit testing, integration testing, and software quality practices.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, interpersonal, and technical communication skills.
