Senior Embedded Engineer – Application Development
IoT Embedded Application System Integration Software Architecture
About Us
At Comminent, we engineer platforms that connect millions of devices in smart city and utility environments. Our teams work at the intersection of hardware, data, and intelligence to build resilient and high-performance systems.
Role Overview
We are looking for an experienced Senior Embedded Engineer to design, develop, and optimize embedded application software for IoT and electronic products. The role involves building application-layer logic, integrating communication stacks, and working closely with hardware, network, and cloud teams to deliver reliable, scalable embedded solutions. You will be responsible for end-to-end firmware development, from architecture and coding to integration, debugging, and performance optimization, ensuring that the embedded software meets the highest standards of reliability and efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement application-layer firmware for embedded systems (IoT devices, controllers, sensors, smart meters, etc.).
- Develop modular, scalable, and maintainable embedded applications on top of existing communication stacks (RF, Wi-SUN, BLE, LoRa, etc.).
- Implement device logic, command handling, data management, and system interfaces (sensors, actuators, storage).
- Integrate protocol layers (DLMS/COSEM, Modbus, MQTT, CoAP, etc.) into the application framework.
- Work closely with hardware and communication stack teams to ensure smooth integration and reliable performance.
- Debug and analyse issues at application, middleware, and driver levels using JTAG, logic analysers, and serial trace tools.
- Support board bring-up, interface validation, and field testing for new product releases.
- Optimize code efficiency, memory usage, and power consumption in real-world conditions.
- Contribute to software architecture design, defining module interfaces and data flow.
- Develop state machines, event-driven architectures, and task scheduling logic for real-time systems.
- Maintain code quality through structured design, documentation, and peer reviews.
- Work with cross-functional teams (hardware, QA, cloud, production) to deliver integrated product solutions.
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior engineers.
- Participate in code reviews, architecture discussions, and design validation sessions.
- Maintain detailed documentation for firmware design, APIs, configuration, and version history.
- Contribute to test planning, validation, and production readiness documentation.
- Ensure compliance with coding standards, embedded security, and reliability best practices.
Required Skills
- Bachelor’s / Master’s degree in Electronics, Communication, Computer, or Electrical Engineering.
- 5–10 years of hands-on experience in embedded software/application development.
- Strong proficiency in C / C++, with understanding of real-time embedded environments (RTOS, Bare Metal).
- Experience with 8-bit / 32-bit microcontrollers (ARM Cortex-M, MSP430, STM32, or equivalent).
- Good understanding of RTOS concepts, inter-task communication, and scheduling.
- Experience in developing or integrating IoT communication protocols (MQTT, CoAP, DLMS/COSEM, Modbus).
- Hands-on experience with hardware interfaces (UART, SPI, I2C, GPIO, ADC, timers, watchdogs).
- Familiarity with version control systems (Git) and continuous integration (CI/CD).
- Excellent debugging, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Good to Have
- Familiarity with wireless protocols such as Wi-SUN, LoRa, BLE, or NB-IoT.
- Knowledge of embedded security, bootloaders, and firmware update mechanisms (OTA).
- Experience with Python scripting for testing and automation.
- Exposure to low-power system design and energy profiling.
