Job description

Company Description

Topgrip Group is a long-established, family-owned business founded in 1980 in Kolkata, specializing in manufacturing brake system valves and forged components for Indian Railways. Over the past 15 years, the company has expanded into global markets, engineering, manufacturing & delivering powertrain automated lines and delivering build-to-print services for Tier One and OEM's in the United States & Europe. Topgrip operates with three factories in India with a team of around 350 employees. The organization focuses on understanding customer requirements and consistently meeting and exceeding expectations. Continuous improvement of processes and the quality management system is central to its commitment to customer satisfaction.

Role Description

We are looking for a Senior Automation & Fixture Design Engineer to design and develop fixtures, jigs, and robotic automation cells for powertrain assembly lines in the automotive sector. This role involves end-to-end mechanical design for automated assembly systems — including robot work cells, rotary/dial index tables, conveyors, and part-specific fixturing — from concept through detailed design, simulation, and support during build, commissioning, and ramp-up.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design fixtures, jigs, and tooling for powertrain component assembly (engine, transmission, e-axle, or related sub-assemblies).
  • Develop layouts and detailed 3D designs for robot work cells, including multi-robot cells, rotary dial/index tables, pick-and-place stations, and conveyor integration.
  • Select and integrate robots, end-effectors (EOAT), pneumatic/hydraulic systems, sensors, and safety guarding into cell designs.
  • Prepare 3D models, detailed manufacturing drawings (GD&T), and BOMs for fixtures and automation equipment using NX, SolidWorks, or Inventor.
  • Perform design validation, tolerance stack-up analysis, and DFM/DFA reviews with cross-functional and manufacturing teams.
  • Coordinate with process/manufacturing engineering to define cycle times, station layouts, and takt-time-driven cell configurations.
  • Support vendor coordination, fabrication follow-up, and on-site trials/debugging during fixture and cell build, installation, and commissioning.
  • Troubleshoot design and functional issues during buy-off, run-off, and production ramp-up, and drive design improvements based on feedback.
  • Ensure designs comply with automotive industry standards, safety norms, and customer-specific engineering standards.
  • Maintain design documentation, revision control, and change management records.
Required Skills & Experience
  • 8+ years of hands‑on experience in fixture design and automation/robot cell design, preferably within the automotive or powertrain industry.
  • Strong working knowledge of robotic work cell design, including layout of multiple robots around rotary dial/index tables or conveyor-fed stations.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD design and detailing using NX, SolidWorks, and/or Inventor (multisoftware exposure preferred).
  • Solid understanding of GD&T, tolerance stack‑up, and DFM/DFA principles.
  • Familiarity with robot brands (ABB, FANUC, KUKA, Yaskawa, etc.), EOAT design, and basic robot reach/cycle‑time considerations.
  • Experience with pneumatic/hydraulic clamping systems, locating principles (3‑2‑1), and exposure to weld cells, plasma/laser cutting cells, or assembly/leak‑test cells is a strong asset.
  • Ability to read and interpret process flow diagrams, PFDs, and customer RFQ/technical specifications.
  • Experience supporting on‑site installation, commissioning, and debugging of automation equipment.
  • Strong communication skills to coordinate with cross‑functional teams, vendors, and customers.
Software Proficiency
  • NX Unigraphics — required (working knowledge)
  • AutoCAD for 2D layouts and cell drawings — required
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, Mechatronics, Production, or Automation Engineering.
  • Prior experience designing dial/rotary index‑based automation cells for powertrain.
  • Exposure to simulation tools (Tecnomatix, Process Simulate, RobotStudio, or similar) is an advantage.
  • Experience working with Tier‑1 automotive suppliers or automation system integrators.
