Qualifications

About the role

We are looking for a Senior Database Developer who can take full ownership of the RDBMS layer powering Curation, Select, and Deals - three of our most business-critical products. The role demands someone who is highly qualified in SQL, schema design, and query performance, with the ability to engage confidently with data engineering teams on big data pipeline integration. The role would require a candidate who understands clean data models, fast queries, and bullet-proof stored procedures at scale.

Role and Responsibilities

• Responsibilities will be structured to focus on execution and will be expected to be hands-on.
• Will include end-to-end product ownership including architecture, design, execution and management of a large and complex platform that records and analyzes large volumes of data.
• These will stretch from generating complex SQL to gain business insight out of the many levels of data, to writing detailed Stored Procedures that give split-second responses.
• The primary scope of this role including stored procedures, query optimization, schema design, indexing strategies, and data modelling across RDBMS systems.
• Own and optimize stored procedures, functions, triggers and views across MS SQL Server and MySQL.
• Design and evolve schemas with sound data modelling practices (3NF, dimensional modelling, SCDs).
• Deep index management - clustered, non-clustered, covering indexes, index fragmentation and rebuild strategies.
• Query plan analysis and tuning - execution plans, statistics, cardinality estimation.
• Enforce ACID compliance, manage transactions and isolation levels.
• Support data engineering team on big data pipeline integrations with RDBMS layer (Spark, Iceberg interop).
• Work on ETL/ELT layers that feed into or read from RDBMS systems.

What we’re looking for

• Manage code using Git, CI, and related tooling proficiently, including resolving merge conflicts, and assist junior team members in environment setup and project onboarding.
• Will include end-to-end product ownership including architecture, design, execution and management of a large and complex platform that records and analyzes large volumes of data.
• These will stretch from generating complex SQL to gain business insight out of the many levels of data, to writing detailed Stored Procedures that give split-second responses.
• The scope of this role includes stored procedures, query optimization, schema design, indexing strategies, and data modelling across RDBMS systems.
• Own and optimize stored procedures, functions, triggers and views across MySQL and MS SQL Server, adhering to team coding standards and conventions while actively participating in code reviews to catch typical issues and avoid recurring mistakes.
• Design and evolve schemas with sound data modelling practices (3NF, dimensional modelling, SCDs), with a strong understanding of existing schemas, cluster structures, and data relationships across at least 2 active projects.
• Deep index management - clustered, non-clustered, covering indexes, index fragmentation and rebuild strategies.
• Query plan analysis and tuning - execution plans, statistics, cardinality estimation.
• Enforce ACID compliance, manage transactions and isolation levels.
• Identify, diagnose and own data synchronization pipelines across servers, tracing delays back to root causes and making deliberate trade-offs between replication speed and reliability guarantees, with working familiarity of MySQL cluster basics and core database configuration files.
• Support data engineering team on big data pipeline integrations with RDBMS layer (Spark, Iceberg interop).
• Work on ETL/ELT layers that feed into or read from RDBMS systems.
