About the Role
We are looking for a Senior Data Governance Consultant to join the Data & Analytics consulting practice, leading data governance engagements for clients in India and outside India. This is a client-facing, hands-on role: the engagement lead on the ground, responsible for assessing data management maturity, designing and implementing governance operating models, data ownership and stewardship, and enabling the supporting data catalogue and data quality capabilities.
The role requires someone who can run an engagement end to end, from scoping and workshops through implementation and adoption, while remaining hands-on in the work. It works with client stakeholders across business and technology, up to CDO and head-of-function level.
Not a pure people management role, a purely advisory governance role, or a coding-heavy data engineering role, though familiarity with data engineering concepts is useful.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead data governance engagements end to end: scope the work, plan delivery, manage client expectations, and act as the primary point of contact for client business and technology stakeholders.
- Lead data maturity assessments (DCAM or similar); identify gaps, define remediation roadmaps and secure client agreement on priorities.
- Design and implement the client's data governance operating model: data domains, ownership, stewardship roles, governance forums, RACI and decision rights.
- Author and drive adoption of the client's governance framework: policies, standards, procedures, data quality rules and stewardship guidelines.
- Implement data quality capabilities: critical data element identification, rule definition, measurement and issue management.
- Enable the client's data catalogue (OpenMetadata, Collibra, Alation, Informatica or similar) as part of the governance rollout: business glossary, ownership, classification, lineage and metadata onboarding of priority sources.
- Translate governance policies and standards into executable workflows, SOPs and operating processes, and track governance KPIs such as ownership coverage, glossary completeness, stewardship participation and adoption progress.
- Run client workshops and steering updates; prepare executive-level communication; lead the governance content of proposals and pitch material; guide and review the work of junior consultants on the engagement.
What We're Looking For
Must have
- 9 to 12 years of experience in data governance, data management or related consulting roles, preferably in financial services, banking or enterprise data environments.
- Has led at least two data governance engagements end to end as the primary client contact, with implementation responsibility and not only assessment or advisory.
- Strong understanding of data governance principles, frameworks and practices: DAMA-DMBOK, DCAM, data ownership and stewardship, data quality and metadata management.
- Hands-on experience designing and implementing governance operating models, ownership and stewardship, and policy and standards adoption at a client or in-house.
- Practical experience with at least one data catalogue or metadata platform in a governance capacity: glossary, ownership, classification, lineage.
- Experience drafting data governance policy, standards and operating model documents.
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to engage senior client stakeholders, manage expectations and explain governance concepts to non-technical audiences.
- Experience contributing to proposals, pitches and engagement scoping.
Good to have
- Experience with clients outside India, including the Middle East.
- DCAM or CDMP certification.
- Hands-on implementation or configuration of any enterprise data catalogue tool (OpenMetadata, Collibra, Alation, Informatica, Atlan, Purview, Unity Catalog or similar).
- MDM programme experience.
- Regulatory data governance context (RBI, BCBS 239, CBUAE or similar).
