Job summary

National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) invites applications for a senior Database Administrator to safeguard and optimize our distributed data platforms. You will manage PostgreSQL, Cassandra, or ClickHouse deployments, implement DR/PITR, and drive performance through schema design and query tuning.

Role requires Linux scripting skills, security stewardship, and close collaboration with software teams to ensure reliable fintech operations.

Qualifications

• Proficiency with at least one of PostgreSQL, Cassandra, or ClickHouse and distributed DB concepts.
• Experience designing schemas, indexing, and partitioning for high-volume fintech workloads.
• Ability to implement backup/restore, DR, and PITR in production environments.
• Strong SQL scripting in Shell/Python for automation and monitoring.
• Familiarity with Linux/Unix environments and security best practices.

Responsibilities

• Install, configure, and maintain database systems with high performance and security.
• Design efficient schemas, indexing, and partitioning for large fintech workloads.
• Set up and manage replication and DR/PITR strategies for business continuity.
• Monitor DB health, tune queries, and plan capacity for peak performance.
• Develop automation scripts (Shell/Python) for DB operations and alerts.
• Manage access control, roles, and security compliance.
• Troubleshoot incidents and document RCA findings.
• Collaborate with application/engineering teams to optimize DB interactions.
• Maintain architecture docs, configurations, and SOPs.
• Operate in 24x7 production support with on-call rotations.

Key responsibilities

• 4. Performance Tuning - Monitor database health, optimize queries, and perform capacity planning to sustain peak performance.
• 5. Automation & Scripting - Develop automation scripts (Shell/Python) for database operations, monitoring, and alerting.
• 6. Security & Compliance - Manage access control, user roles, and ensure adherence to security best practices and compliance standards.
• 7. Incident Management - Troubleshoot and resolve database issues and outages with structured RCA documentation.
• 8. Collaboration - Work closely with application and engineering teams to optimize database interactions and system performance.
• 9. Documentation - Maintain clear documentation of architecture, configurations, and SOPs.
• 10. 24×7 Support - Operate in a round-the-clock production support model with on-call rotations.

Key skills and experience required

• 1. Proficiency in at least one of: PostgreSQL, Cassandra, or ClickHouse (multiple is a plus).
• 2. Strong knowledge of data modeling, partitioning, replication, and distributed database concepts.
• 3. Hands-on experience with SQL, PL/pgSQL, and/or CQL query writing and optimization.
• 4. Familiarity with backup/restore, DR, and PITR strategies in production environments.
• 5. Working experience in Linux/Unix environments with Shell/Python scripting skills.
• 6. Understanding of database security, role-based access control, and compliance frameworks.
• 7. Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills.
• 8. Ability to work in a 24×7 production support environment.
