Job summary

Virtusa in Pune, India, is seeking an experienced Senior Engineering Manager to lead sprint delivery across 3–4 teams in a distributed setup. You will protect teams from noise, resolve cross-team dependencies, and coach ~30 engineers toward growth and retention while collaborating with onshore stakeholders.

The role requires hands-on software engineering with Java/Spring Boot microservices, Kafka, and an agile mindset.

Qualifications

• 7–12 years total experience with 1-2 years of people management.
• Experience managing multiple scrum teams simultaneously.
• Hands-on software engineering background.
• Prior work on Java/Spring Boot microservices.
• Experience managing offshore or distributed engineering teams.
• Familiarity with Kafka, reactive programming, and integration patterns (SQS, JMS).
• Exposure to OA/academic publishing platforms or similarly complex B2B SaaS environments.
• Agile/Scrum certification (CSM, SAFe, or equivalente).

Responsibilities

• Own sprint delivery across 3–4 teams; maintain an honest and proactive delivery signal upward.
• Identify and resolve cross-team dependencies laterally — with peer managers, tech leads, and adjacent teams.
• Diagnose and act on sprint performance issues — distinguishing people, process, and technical root causes.
• Technical Leadership: Hands-on dev background; challenge estimates; surface technical risk on Java/Spring Boot/Kafka stack.
• Engage on architectural and design decisions; identify risks and engage constructively with tech leads.
• People Development: Manage ~30 engineers in Pune; growth, career development, retention.
• Identify and turn around flight-risk engineers early; track attrition signals.
• Develop tech leads — both technical and people leadership.
• Build a locally owned team culture in Pune; ensure growth opportunities as onshore.
• Run distributed performance management cycles in partnership with onshore product owners.
• Drive thoughtful AI tooling adoption across teams — balancing experimentation with quality and security guardrails.
• Measure AI tooling impact on velocity beyond perception.

• Identify and resolve cross-team dependencies laterally — with peer managers, tech leads, and adjacent teams — without defaulting to escalation. Protect teams from delivery noise (ad-hoc requests, priority thrash) while preserving legitimate business responsiveness
• Diagnose and act on sprint performance issues — distinguishing people, process, and technical root causes
• Technical Leadership. Earn credibility with senior engineers through a hands‑on dev background; challenge estimates, assess feasibility, and surface technical risk on a Java/Spring Boot/Kafka stack
• Engage meaningfully on architectural and design decisions —not as a decision‑maker, but as a credible technical voice. Identify risks in proposed solutions and engage constructively without undermining tech leads
• People Development.Manage ~30 engineers in Pune through tech leads; own their growth, career development, and retention.Build career paths that feel visible and achievable in an offshore context
