Job description

About Astrobase Space Technologies

Astrobase is a pioneering spacetech startup founded by prominent Senior ISRO scientists and IIT Bombay alumni with over 20 years of experience in designing, manufacturing, testing and flying advanced Cryogenic Launch Vehicles, driven by a vision to make India a space‑tech powerhouse.

We are developing a state‑of‑the‑art Two‑Stage‑to‑Orbit launch vehicle powered by a cryogenic propulsion system that uses liquid oxygen and liquid methane. The engine design and development is in advanced stages, with hot‑fire expected in the first quarter of 2026. The vehicle development is progressing rapidly in parallel, presently at the preliminary design stage, followed by critical design and development testing within the next 1.5 years.

Overview of Role

The Senior Mechanical / Mechanisms Engineer will contribute to the design, development, testing, and qualification of critical flight and ground mechanisms for launch‑vehicle systems. This role requires strong technical ownership, cross‑functional coordination, and hands‑on involvement from concept through developmental flight readiness.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the design, development, and validation of flight and ground mechanisms required for fully functional launch vehicle operations.
  • Own mechanism design from concept, trade studies, and detailed design through manufacturing, assembly, testing, and qualification.
  • Coordinate closely with Analysis, Manufacturing, Assembly, Integration, and Testing teams to mature designs in accordance with the program development plan.
  • Drive design optimization considering structural integrity, mass, reliability, manufacturability, and operational constraints.
  • Define, plan, and oversee mechanism‑level test campaigns, including functional, structural, environmental, and qualification testing for developmental flights.
  • Review and approve test plans, procedures, and results; ensure compliance with design and mission requirements.
  • Identify technical risks early and implement mitigation strategies through design improvements and test validation.
  • Support configuration management, non‑conformance resolution, and design changes during development and integration.
  • Participate in and lead design reviews (PDR, CDR), Test Readiness Reviews (TRR), and Flight Readiness Reviews (FRR).
  • Prepare and approve comprehensive technical documentation at all stages of development, including:
    • Design reports and drawings; test plans, procedures, and qualification reports.
    • Compliance matrices and technical justifications.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace Engineering or a related field.
  • Typically 5–10 + years of experience in mechanical or aerospace system development.
  • Proven experience in design, development, and qualification of aerospace mechanisms or structural systems.
  • Strong experience working with cross‑functional engineering and manufacturing teams.
  • Experience supporting flight hardware development and testing is highly desirable.
Key Skills & Competencies
  • Deep understanding of mechanical design, aerospace mechanisms, and development testing.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills with a hands‑on engineering approach.
  • Ability to take technical ownership and mentor junior engineers.
  • Excellent technical documentation and communication skills.
Benefits
  • Creating History: Productively develop cutting‑edge launch vehicles and transform space access.
  • Collaborating with Experts: Work alongside ISRO scientists and industry veterans.
  • Growing with Purpose: Take on leadership roles as the organization expands.
  • Pioneering Space Technology: Influence the global space ecosystem.
  • Thriving as a Whole Human: Comprehensive health coverage, generous leave, and flexible work options.
  • Celebrating Together: Join in historic launches and daily victories with regular applause.
