Kiwi is seeking a Backend Software Engineer (SDE 1 or SDE 2) in Bengaluru to design and implement scalable REST APIs using Java. The role emphasizes Spring Boot, database optimization with PostgreSQL/MySQL, and caching with Redis or Memcached.

You will contribute to robust backend services, work with Docker and Git in a collaborative, fast-paced environment, and evolve system architecture through practical design decisions.

Qualifications

• Strong data structures and algorithms with analysis of time and space complexity.
• Hands-on experience with Spring Boot and Spring MVC.
• Knowledge of dependency injection patterns and how to apply them effectively.
• Proficiency in object-oriented programming and concurrency fundamentals.
• Proficiency with Linux, shell scripting, HTTP protocols, and JSON data formats.
• Ability to think through system design problems and propose scalable solutions.
• Excellent written communication for documentation, code reviews, and team collaboration.
• Familiarity with AI-assisted coding tools including Claude Code, Cursor, and Copilot.

About the role

• Backend software engineer position at Kiwi, with two levels available: SDE 1 for candidates with 1–4 years of professional backend experience, or SDE 2 for those with 4+ years
• Primary focus on Java development with preference for Java 17 or later versions

What you’ll work on

• Building and maintaining REST APIs with robust design principles
• Database optimization using PostgreSQL or MySQL, including query tuning, index creation, and resolving N+1 query problems
• Caching layer management with Redis or Memcached for performance improvement
• Version control workflows using Git and containerization with Docker

What we’re looking for

• Solid grasp of data structures and algorithms with ability to analyze time and space complexity trade-offs
• Hands‑on experience implementing Spring Boot and Spring MVC frameworks
• Understanding of dependency injection patterns and how to apply them effectively
• Competence in object‑oriented programming principles and concurrency fundamentals
• Proficiency with Linux, shell scripting, HTTP protocols, and JSON data formats
• Capability to think through system design problems and propose scalable solutions
