Job summary

Merck Life Science in Bengaluru seeks a seasoned Process chemist to drive R&D, scale-up, and pilot plant activities. You will work across kilo lab and small-scale production, performing characterization with NMR/IR/HPLC/MS and guiding purification strategies.

The role requires 3–10 years in pharma CRO or related fields, with strong knowledge of organic synthesis, process development, and tech transfer to pilot plants. Attention to GMP/QA practices is advantageous.

Qualifications

• Education: MSC in organic chemistry or industrial chemistry.
• Experience: 3–10 years in pharma CRO or specialty chemicals.
• Experience in process R&D, scale up, pilot plant, Kilo lab, small-scale cat/ log production.
• Experience handling 1–50 L scale reactions, workup, purification and characterization by NMR/IR/GC/HPLC.
• Knowledge of pyrophoric and moisture-sensitive reagents handling.

Responsibilities

• Execute and optimize process R&D, scale-up, and pilot plant activities.
• Operate Kilo Lab and support kilo lab scale production.
• Characterize products using instrumental methods (NMR, IR, GC, HPLC, MS).
• Plan and schedule production workflows.
• Drive process improvements and troubleshoot effectively.
• Perform organic synthesis tasks and manage shifts independently.

Who You Are

Education: MSC (organic Chemistry/Industrial Chemistry)

Experience: 3 to 10 Years

Mandate

• Having 6-10yr experience in pharma CRO, specialty chemical industry.
• Mandatory experience of working in process R&D, scale up, pilot plant, Kilo lab, small scale CatLog production.
• Experience in handling 1litre to 50litre scale reaction, workup, purification and characterization of the products using analytical techniques (eg. NMR, IR, GC, HPLC, MP, elemental analysis)
• Should have handled pyrophoric & moisture sensitive reactions and reagents at 20L scale.
• Handling independently reaction in shifts.
• Knowledge of organic chemistry synthesis, reaction mechanism, asymmetric synthesis, catalysis, ligand chemistry etc.
• Expert in purification techniques like high vacuum distillation, recrystallization, column chromatography etc.
• Expert in process development and scale-up up to pilot plant. Should have knowledge of tech transfer of process to pilot plant.
• Knowledge of Lean-six sigma will be added advantage.
• Should know GDP and have faced QA audits (GMP, ISO etc).
• Knowledge of SAP will be added advantage.
• Should have basic knowledge of Word, Excel etc.
