Principle Solution Architect - F&O
Job Summary
Caterpillar is seeking an accomplished Solution Architect with deep expertise in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations (F&O/AX). This role will serve as a trusted technical authority, shaping architectural decisions, designing complex solutions, and collaborating across product, integration, DevOps, cloud infrastructure, and development teams to deliver high‑quality applications. The successful candidate will lead the Caterpillar Enterprise Resource Platform (ERP) template for Caterpillar Dealers, architecting scalable and secure solutions while driving seamless integrations across enterprise systems. Beyond solution design, the role includes mentoring engineering teams, ensuring adherence to Microsoft standards, and guiding organizations through digital transformation initiatives. A strong focus on performance, governance, and business value will be essential to achieving success in this position.
Responsibilities
- Enterprise Architecture Leadership – Define and own the end‑to‑end architecture for Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations across Finance, Supply Chain, Retail & Commerce and Project Operations; translate complex business requirements into scalable, secure, and high‑performing ERP solutions that align with organizational goals; collaborate with architects, business analysts, and other engineers on technical strategy and ensure alignment with business goals and product roadmap.
- Development & Customization – Lead X++ development, extensions, and upgrade‑safe customizations; establish and maintain coding standards (X++, C#), ALM processes, and code review guidelines to ensure quality and consistency; oversee configuration, customization, and extensions using Power Platform (Power Apps, Power Automate, Power BI).
- Integration Design & Delivery – Design and implement integrations with CE, third‑party systems, and legacy applications using OData, APIs, and Azure services (Logic Apps, Service Bus, Data Factory); collaborate with functional consultants, project managers, and vendor partners to align solutions with business needs.
- Data, Security & Compliance – Support data migration strategies, security role design, and compliance requirements; conduct design reviews, solution validation, and ensure adherence to Microsoft standards.
- Reusable Assets & Frameworks – Develop reusable templates, frameworks, and accelerators to standardize solution delivery; conduct detailed workshops with business stakeholders to map requirements to native functionality or identify necessary customizations.
- DevOps & Release Management – Manage DevOps pipelines, CI/CD, and environment strategies for F&O projects; oversee Lifecycle Services (LCS) and Power Platform Admin Center (PPAC), managing code branches, build pipelines, and releases across Dev/UAT/Prod environments.
- Effective Communications – Translate technical requirements from Dynamics 365 F&O (Mandatory) and CE (Optional) into clear, business‑friendly language; lead workshops, demos, and discussions with finance, supply chain, sales, service, marketing, IT, and dealer stakeholders; present and negotiate effectively to align different teams and priorities; work collaboratively to build consensus and drive adoption across departments.
- Innovation & Continuous Improvement – Stay current with Microsoft technologies and industry trends to inform strategic decisions; ensure adherence to best practices in software engineering, DevOps, and solution governance.
Qualifications
- Software Development experience with deep hands‑on experience with Dynamics 365 F&O modules (Finance, Supply Chain, Project Operations) and a proven track record of leading large scale enterprise software projects.
- Expert level knowledge of X++ and .NET (C#), deep understanding of D365 F&O layered architecture, Data Entities, and OData/REST APIs; performance tuning expertise to optimize batch jobs, queries, and custom code.
- Knowledge of software development life cycle, including formal methodologies, Agile/Scrum practices, SAFe PI planning, and performance tuning strategies.
- Skilled in software integration strategies between F&O, CE, third‑party apps, and legacy systems; designs and implements data exchange interfaces using OData, REST APIs, DMF, and Azure services; experience with Common Data Services (Dual Write) for integration; expertise in ETL of electronic data.
- Deep understanding of software architecture, design patterns, agile methodologies, and performance optimization; guidance on ALM, environment strategy, integration strategy, data migration strategy, and security strategy.
- Expertise in Azure DevOps: Git, pipelines, CI/CD, release management, test plans; oversight of Lifecycle Services and Power Platform Admin Center; experience with Azure tenant and environment management.
- Proficiency in SQL Server Management Studio and data migration tools; ability to design and deliver AI‑powered ERP solutions using Copilot Studio and AI Builder; practical experience with Power Platform and Azure services; extensive experience with data architecture, solution frameworks, and reusable accelerators.
- Proven track record of contributing to large‑scale enterprise ERP implementations, ensuring upgrade‑safe customizations and technical excellence.
- Advanced proficiency in .NET/C#, JavaScript, SQL for extending ERP solutions and optimizing database performance.
- Work experience of 15–17+ years in ERP technologies with 10+ years in Dynamics 365 CE/CRM; experience as Technical Lead / Solution Architect in 10+ full‑cycle F&O implementations; exposure to Agile/Scrum/SAFe methodologies, PI planning, and DevOps practices; experience with global rollouts, multi‑entity implementations, and regulatory compliance.
Preferred Experience
- Exposure to Dealer and Rental industry processes, tailoring ERP solutions to industry‑specific requirements.
- Experience with Common Data Services (Dual Write) to integrate F&O with Dynamics 365 Sales, Field Service, and Project Operations; collaboration with ISVs and IPs.
- Agile certifications (Optional) – Certified in SAFe Product Owner/Product Manager (POPM) and Certified Scrum Professional – Product Owner (CSP PO).
- Test automation expertise with modern testing frameworks for Dynamics 365 F&O applications; preferred exposure to Leapwork, Azure App Testing, Playwright, with proficiency in JMeter, Ranorex, Selenium or equivalent platforms.
- Certifications (Preferred) – MB 700: Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations Solution Architect Expert; MB 500: Finance & Operations Apps Developer; PL 600: Microsoft Power Platform Solution Architect.
Additional Details
Ability to travel up to 20% - typically to Cat Digital hubs and/or Dealers in various regions.
