Job summary

WSP India in Mumbai seeks a experienced Principal Mechanical Engineer to lead project design within an engineering consultancy. You will coordinate with the UK Building Services team, mentor junior staff, and drive high-quality, cost-effective design solutions across disciplines.

The role requires 12–15 years of mechanical engineering experience, familiarity with UK standards, and strong communication skills to liaise with international teams.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering (minimum).
• 12–15 years of relevant experience.
• Membership to accredited engineering bodies (CIBSE, IMechE, ISHRAE, ASHRAE etc.).
• Good working knowledge of ASME, ISHRAE, ASHRAE, NFPA, BS, and CIBSE.
• Experience with IFC drawings, schedules, datasheets and P&ID.

Job Description

This role is to work as part of an engineering consultancy design team, taking a principal role in project design work, focused on production, liaison with the WSP UK Building Services Team, and mentoring/coaching junior team members.

Responsibilities

Prepare feasibility study reports to meet brief requirements in the agreed format and review the scope of works with the Local GCC Head.

• Work with the WSP UK Team to gather a design specification compliant with the employers’ requirements, agree on its format and content, and monitor and review its preparation ensuring delivery by the due date.
• Clearly define requirements and purpose of use with the Local GCC Head and WSP UK Team to allow detailed design.
• Carry out detailed design to UK Industry Regulations, and relevant Code of Practice and standards ensuring Construction Design and Management (CDM), QA, and technical review and sign-off by the Local GCC Head, including complex calculations and coordination issues.
• Provide documentary information via the WSP UK Team to assist in the preparation of tender documents, ensuring that information for tender preparation is completed in requisite detail and to deadlines, and keep the WSP UK Team informed regarding design progress through explanation of design decisions.
• Deal with the day-to-day queries from the WSP UK Team, ensuring that relevant information is available on time for any design/construction activity.
• Report to the WSP UK Team in association with the Local GCC Head any variance between the works constructed and the design intent.
• Lead the design process and encourage the rest of the team to deliver appropriate and cost-effective solutions to the agreed programme.
• Participate in team meetings, disseminate information within the team, and communicate with other teams in WSP.
• Identify and flag additional time & cost to the Local GCC Head.
• Able to complete detailed designs using own initiative on all technical aspects of their discipline. Provides support and supervision of juniors. Identify and flag additional time & cost to the Local GCC Head.
• Add value to projects by bringing the right technical advice and solutions.
• Knowledge of all services disciplines, structural, architectural, fire, and acoustic disciplines with an understanding of the interfaces and information exchange.

Requirements Between Your Discipline And The Other Disciplines.

• Use BIM Track on Projects. Raise and record comments. Help address any comments as applicable to your role via workshop/calls.
• Undertake regular CAD/Navisworks reviews/walkthroughs of project models.
• Provide comments and propose solutions to clashes. Ensure corrections are tracked and completed.
• Be able to delegate and hold those you delegate to accountable. Monitor the quality of delegated work and provide feedback good/bad on delegated work.
• Provide feedback to line managers periodically.
• Understand BIM Execution Plans.
• Undertake technical reviews, peer reviews, checks and contribute to the design
• Provide continuous feedback to the Local Head of GCC on the effectiveness of the protocols and processes in place with a view to continuous improvement
• Develop positive professional relationships with the WSP UK Team, communicating openly about project progress
• Participate in Project meetings, team meetings, disseminate information within the team, and communicate with other teams in WSP
• Identify and act on, or refer, potential risk issues and follow in full the company commercial and contracting processes.
• Manage delegated tasks to ensure that deadlines are met and flag resourcing concerns to team leader
• Identify and flag additional fees to the Local GCC Head
• Complete timesheet accurately ahead of weekly deadlines.

Key Competencies / Skills / Qualifications Skills

• The applicant should have hands on experience on the Industry projects such as Process Industries, Pharmaceuticals, Clean Room Design, Refineries etc., and adequate knowledge on the relevant regulations but not limited to.
• Good hold on the entire cycle of a project from the concept design to the use of the building.
• Preparation of IFC Drawings, Schedules, Datasheets schematics and P&ID
• Should possess membership to an accredited engineering body i.e. CIBSE, IMechE, ISHRAE, ASHRAE etc.,
• Excellent working knowledge of ASME, ISHRAE, ASHRAE, NFPA, BS, and CIBSE.

Good working knowledge of UK Building/Industry codes would be advantageous.

• Hands-on working experience in preparing all the design calculations with software like Bluebeam, PDF Exchanger, AutoCAD, Revit., BIM 360 / ACC would be advantageous.

• Carry out regular design reviews. Understand the specifications and tender conditions.
• Good communication & presentation skills.
