PowerSystem Engineer Intern

We are seeking aPower System Engineer Intern with a strong interest in Distributed EnergyResources (DER) integration and power system analysis. This role focuses onmodeling, simulation, and analysis of DER‑rich power systems using modern, open‑sourcepower system tools. The intern will work on real‑world grid planning andoperational problems related to solar, storage, EVs, flexible loads, and activedistribution networks.
This positionis well suited for candidates who enjoy analytical work, working with data andmodels, and exploring next‑generation grid operation and planning approaches.
Keyresponsibilities
- Assist with power flow and networkanalysis for transmission and distribution systems with high DER penetration
- Develop and validate power systemmodels using open‑source tools such as PyPSA and pandapower
- Support analysis of DER integrationscenarios including solar PV, battery storage, EV charging, and flexible loads
- Perform steady‑state studies such asload flow, voltage analysis, congestion analysis, and loss analysis
- Support time‑series simulations forDER behavior and network impacts
- Assist in scenario analysis for gridplanning, hosting capacity, and operational studies
- Work with grid datasets includingnetwork topology, asset parameters, and DER profiles
- Document modeling assumptions,methodologies, and analysis results
- Collaborate with power systemengineers, data engineers, and software developers on integrated analysisworkflows
Requirements
Requiredqualifications
- Currently pursuing or recentlycompleted a masters in Power Systems, Energy Systems, or a related field
- Strong fundamentals in power systemanalysis, especially load flow concepts
- Understanding of DER concepts such asinverter‑based generation, net load, flexibility, and aggregation
- Experience or coursework involvingpower system modeling or simulation
- Working knowledge of Python foranalysis and modeling
- Ability to understand and work withsingle‑line diagrams and network models
- Strong problem‑solving and analyticalskills
- Good written and verbal communicationskills
Preferredskills (nice to have)
- Hands‑on experience with PyPSA,pandapower, or similar open‑source power system frameworks
- Familiarity with time‑seriessimulations and scenario‑based analysis
- Exposure to optimization concepts usedin power systems (OPF, capacity expansion, unit commitment – conceptual levelis sufficient)
- Experience working with DER datasetssuch as solar generation profiles, load profiles, or EV charging data
- Basic familiarity with distributionsystem analysis and unbalanced systems
- Exposure to grid modernization topicssuch as DERMS, flexibility markets, or active network management
- Academic projects, internships, orresearch related to DER or renewable integration
